8A Response To My Critics
On Gaza, Theology, and the Art of Losing Elaborately

My article “When Chosen People Forget Their Covenant” examined the relationship between covenantal theology, the Zionist project, and the conduct of the Israeli state in Gaza. It used Rabbi Elhanan Beck of Neturei Karta as an entry point into a broader structural critique of how transcendent monotheism treats prior spiritual traditions, and what happens when a tradition abandons its own ethical foundations in pursuit of sovereign power.
The article received largely positive reception. A small number of critics produced twenty six distinct arguments between them. Rather than continuing to trade responses in comment sections with strangers, I am addressing those arguments here in one place where they can be examined properly. The section headers are the critics’ own words. That is intentional.
These responses are litigious, exhaustive, and largely without merit. I do not enjoy argument for its own sake. Some people do, and to be fair, Talmudic tradition deliberately trains its practitioners to dispute, to probe, to find the weakness in every position and press it relentlessly. These responses demonstrate that training is alive and well.
The problem is that debate skill and factual grounding are not the same thing. You can be technically proficient and completely wrong. When your position requires you to defend a state that posts rape videos, cheers civilian casualties from the border, and bombs children during ceasefires, no amount of rhetorical sophistication closes that gap. You are just losing more elaborately.
I do not leave these arguments unanswered because silence reads as concession and these people know it. So here we are. The headers below are their words. That is intentional. There is no more efficient way to demonstrate that an argument cannot survive scrutiny than to let it introduce itself.
“100% AI Generated Bigotry”
I use AI as a writing tool. I do not contest that. Human and AI synergy is my acknowledged method and I stand behind it without apology. Dismissing an argument because of how it was developed rather than whether it is true is a genetic fallacy, which is a way of saying it is not an argument at all. It is a way of avoiding one.
The ideas stand or fall on their own evidence. We will get to the evidence shortly.
“I’m Sure You’re Equally Hard on Christianity, Islam, Latter Day Saints, Rastafarians”
When is the last time Rastafarians got together and decided to bomb an entire people out of existence or conduct an ethnic cleansing? I will wait.
I call BS where I see it and current BS trumps BS from a thousand years ago. I have written extensively about Christianity’s structural role in the erasure of Celtic, Norse, and Germanic spiritual traditions and its direct relationship to the settler colonial logic that produced the Native American genocide. I have written about Islam as a transcendent tradition with the same foundational problems. The traditions that do not appear in my work are the ones that have not organized themselves into active projects of displacement and erasure.
That is not selective targeting. That is following the evidence. If the Southern Baptist Convention decides to ethnically cleanse someone next Tuesday I will cover that too.
“Judaism Is Hardly Unique in This Way”
Correct. Foundational myths universally produce in group and out group boundaries. That is precisely the point. The critique is structural, not ethnic. Every transcendent tradition that claims exclusive divine mandate must by necessity caricature what came before it. You cannot claim to be the one true revelation while treating prior traditions as legitimate.
What makes the current situation specific is that this particular foundational myth is being used in real time to justify displacing a living population from land they have continuously occupied for centuries. The myth does not become more credible because other myths share its architecture. And the land claim itself does not survive scrutiny. The genetic and archaeological evidence does not support a unified Jewish people with an unbroken ancestral connection to that specific territory. The argument that responsibility for displacement is softened because other traditions also have foundational myths is not a defense. It is a confession dressed up as one.
“Precisely What Has Given You the Impression That Judaism Ever Asserted Egyptians Were Such Primitives”
This is a cherry pick and a deliberate one. The argument in my article was never about Egyptian political power. Pharaoh’s power is essential to the Exodus narrative. Nobody disputes that. A credible antagonist requires a credible threat. That is basic storytelling.
The argument was specifically about Egyptian spiritual and intellectual authority. The magicians in Exodus are not there to demonstrate Egyptian wisdom. They are there to lose. They replicate the early miracles just enough to establish minimal credibility and then fail completely and disappear from the narrative. Their tradition is never engaged on its own terms. It exists solely as a foil.
The Egyptian priestly tradition by 1500 BCE represented two thousand years of accumulated knowledge in medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and architecture. The people who calculated the geometry of structures that are still standing today get reduced to court conjurers who fail a power contest and vanish. The critic answered a question I did not ask. Preserving Egypt’s political power while erasing its epistemic authority is not engagement. It is a more sophisticated form of the same erasure.
“This Is Not By Any Stretch an Elevation or Badge of Superiority, But a Weight of Greater Restriction and Responsibility”
Get off the cross. Someone needs the wood.
Framing a categorical distinction between your group and all of humanity as a burden rather than a privilege does not change the structural outcome. Whether you call it chosen responsibility or divine superiority you are still asserting a two tier humanity with your tradition as the reference standard. The practical consequences of that distinction, legal apartheid, differential treatment of Palestinian life, land claims that override the rights of people actually living on the land, do not become less real because the in group narrativizes its position as a weight.
Performing sacrifice while exercising power is still exercising power.
“In Judaism, the Righteous of All Nations Have a Place in the World to Come”
This sounds generous until you examine what righteous means. It means adherence to the Noahide laws, a framework defined entirely within Jewish theological categories by Jewish theological authorities for the benefit of a Jewish theological worldview. Animistic and immanent traditions do not organize their practice around law codes at all. The Piraha of the Amazon, the Celtic practitioner, the Norse gothi, the Egyptian priest, none of them map onto Noahide compliance. They are not lapsed monotheists who almost got it right. They are people operating from a completely different philosophical architecture that the righteous gentile doctrine cannot even see clearly enough to evaluate honestly.
And Beck’s own Talmudic framework is explicit about what happens to Jews who abandon God. They fall below animal status. That logic does not become more generous when applied to traditions that never accepted the covenant in the first place.
Who authorized the Noahide framework as the universal standard for human righteousness? The answer is the same tradition that benefits from being the standard setter. That is not theology. That is self appointed jurisdiction. Nobody put you in charge.
“Those Outspoken in Their Disdain for Jews Upon These Grounds Are Otherwise Silent Where Other Faiths Are Concerned”
Whataboutism is not a rebuttal. The fact that other traditions share structural problems does not make those problems acceptable in this tradition. And the comparative badness argument cuts the wrong way here. Christianity and Islam’s records of erasure and conquest are extensive and I have written about both. But right now, today, it is not a Christian state posting videos of soldiers celebrating atrocities. It is not an Islamic state that has received three hundred billion dollars in American aid to conduct a live genocide. Current conduct is what gets examined. The critic is using theological equivalence to manufacture moral equivalence where none exists.
“I Find It Quite Amusing How the So-Called Anti-Zionist Focuses Solely on Judaism and Fails to Address the Half of Israeli Jews That Are Not at All Religious”
This argument does not weaken the critique. It destroys the critic’s own defense.
If the driving force behind Zionism and the Gaza campaign is not religious conviction then it cannot be defended as a spiritual movement fulfilling divine covenant. Remove the theology and what remains is naked ethnosupremacism. A colonial project operating purely on ethnic entitlement. And that ethnic entitlement has no credible biological or historical foundation. Ashkenazi Jews are predominantly of European descent. The population conducting this campaign has a weaker genetic claim to that land than the Palestinians who have lived there continuously for centuries.
The critic inadvertently made the argument for me. Strip away the theology and you have European settlers displacing an indigenous population on the basis of an ethnic identity that does not survive serious scrutiny. That is not a defense of Israel. That is the definition of settler colonialism.
“It Is Impossible to Assign Collective Guilt for Something Like Genocide”
The collective guilt defense collapses against the documented evidence of collective behavior. This is not a case of a state acting against or ahead of its population while the majority remains innocent bystanders. Eighty percent of Israeli Jewish citizens support the conduct in Gaza. Israeli civilians gather at the border to watch the bombing and cheer. Soldiers post videos celebrating atrocities on social media. Citizens march demanding more aggressive action. The internal opposition is a small minority treated as traitors.
You do not get to cheer from the stands and then claim you were not part of the game.
“This Is All Part of the Language of Dehumanization”
This is an inversion of reality. The article argues that dividing humanity into tiers of worth is the dehumanizing structure. That is a universalist position. One human race. Naming that structure is not dehumanization. It is the only way to dismantle it.
The actual language of dehumanization is calling Arab civilians animals. The actual language of dehumanization is a two tier legal system where one group has full citizenship rights and another has none. The actual language of dehumanization is labeling dead children as human shields to dissolve moral accountability.
The critic is accusing the universalist of dehumanizing the supremacist by refusing to grant the supremacist special standing. That is not a serious argument.
“He’s Literally Arguing That Jews Benefit From Dispossession and Servitude. That’s Right Up There With Slavery Benefited Blacks”
The slavery comparison fails structurally buty boy howdy does it reveal a whole bushel full of cherry picking disengenuity.
Black people were chattel. They were property. They were locked out of every lever of institutional power for centuries and when they accumulated wealth it was systematically destroyed. Tulsa 1921 being the most documented example. The Jewish experience in exile is a categorically different history that includes severe persecution and simultaneous proximity to power that Black people never had access to.
Canon law forbade Christians from lending money at interest. Jews were granted specific dispensation to do it and were in many cases deliberately installed in that financial function by Christian monarchs who needed capital markets but could not formally operate them. That is a protected economic niche granted by sovereign authority. The court Jew phenomenon placed figures like the Rothschild network at the center of European state finance across multiple sovereign powers simultaneously. The modern American iteration is a lobbying architecture so effective that voting against it ends political careers, a fact discussed openly by the participants themselves.
Black people did not sit at the right hand of medieval kings. Black people were never granted special economic dispensation. Black people never built a billionaire donor network that captured a superpower’s foreign policy apparatus. These are not comparable histories. Deploying the Black experience as a shield against structural critique is not solidarity. It is appropriation of Black suffering to deflect accountability.
The structural difference runs deeper than institutional access. Black people had no choice about integration. They were forced into a society that excluded them at every level and built culture, community, and institutions from nothing with no protection and no exit. The Jewish diaspora by contrast maintained deliberate separation as both a survival strategy and an identity project. Parallel legal systems, kehilla governance, transnational networks of obligation and commerce that operated across borders and sovereign boundaries, and a primary loyalty to the transnational community that consistently took precedence over loyalty to the host society and its neighbors.
That is not the profile of a persecuted underclass with no agency. That is a people who made strategic choices about how to relate to power and in many cases those choices worked. Comparing that history to chattel slavery is not an act of solidarity with Black people. It is an attempt to borrow their suffering as a shield while erasing everything that makes the two histories structurally distinct.
The observation that Jewish intellectual production flourished under exile is a historical observation about conditions, not a claim that dispossession is desirable. Collapsing that distinction is not an argument. It is a rhetorical move.
“I Wonder If You’ll Be Anywhere Near as Calm as We’ve Been”
This is the wishful thinking of a sociopath dressed up as a warning. The speaker imagines a future where critics of Israeli conduct get rounded up and massacred and presents that as a cautionary tale rather than the eliminationist fantasy it actually is.
Gaza tells us exactly who does the rounding up in practice. The IDF has killed over forty thousand people, the majority civilians, destroyed hospitals, blocked food and water, and its own soldiers have documented and published their celebrations of those acts. A nuclear armed state that is currently conducting a live genocide while its civilian population cheers from the border is not a sympathetic victim warning others about future persecution. It is an existential threat making its intentions visible. The world should take that seriously and not in the direction the critic intends.
“Neturei Karta Is a Cult No More Representative of Jews Than the Westboro Baptist Church Represents Christians or ISIS Represents Muslims”
This dismissal directly contradicts the critic’s own earlier argument. Considerable energy was spent arguing that you cannot assign collective characteristics to Jewish people because of internal diversity, that less than five percent hold supremacist views, that half are secular, that the group is too diverse for generalization. Then in the same breath the critic dismisses Neturei Karta as unrepresentative fringe.
You cannot simultaneously argue that Jewish diversity makes collective characterization impossible and that a dissenting Jewish voice is too marginal to count. Pick one. Either internal diversity matters, in which case Neturei Karta’s theological position deserves serious engagement as a legitimate voice within the tradition, or it does not matter, in which case the diversity defense against collective accountability also collapses.
The theological argument Beck represents does not depend on Beck personally. The covenantal conditional holiness doctrine is internally coherent within Orthodox tradition regardless of who holds it. Dismissing the messenger does not touch the argument.
“The Typical Antizionist Behavior of Trotting Out Neturei Karta as Token Jews”
Antizionist is not a pejorative. It is an accurate description of a position held by a growing majority of the world including a significant and growing portion of Jewish people. The critic is using the label as a thought stopping mechanism, a way of categorizing the argument so it can be dismissed without engagement.
Zionism is a political ideology, not an ethnic identity. Opposing it is not antisemitism any more than opposing apartheid was anti-Afrikaner. The conflation of Zionism with Jewish identity is itself a political move that serves a specific purpose, making the state of Israel immune from the scrutiny applied to every other state on earth.
Every argument in this article stands on its own evidence. The historical record, the documented conduct in Gaza, the structural critique of transcendent theology, the genetic and archaeological evidence undermining the land claim, none of it depends on what label gets applied to the person making it. Labeling the critic does not touch the argument. It just tells you the critic has run out of substantive responses.
“You Cannot Simultaneously Condemn the Bible as an Oppressive Document That Fails to Engage With Pagan Traditions While Also Saying That the Jewish People Were More Productive in Exile”
There is no contradiction here. These two claims operate on completely different registers and do not touch each other.
The first is a structural critique of how a foundational text treats prior spiritual traditions. The second is a historical observation about the conditions under which a particular intellectual tradition produced its most significant work. The Hebrew Bible was largely compiled during the Babylonian exile. The Mishnah and Talmud came after the destruction of the Second Temple. Those are historical facts, not value judgments about exile.
If anything the two observations reinforce each other. The tradition that built its intellectual architecture during diaspora and produced its greatest achievements under conditions of dispossession is now using sovereign power to conduct a genocide. That is not a contradiction. That is the closest thing to emprical proof that my argument is 100% valid that I have ever seen.
“The Technological and Medical Advances That Have Come Out of the Modern State of Israel Certainly Compete With What Jews Produced Outside of It”
This claim does not survive contact with economic reality. Israel has never operated as a standalone economy. It is the largest cumulative recipient of American foreign aid in history, over three hundred billion dollars in current value since 1948. That figure does not include private donations, Holocaust reparations from Germany, diaspora investment, or the preferential trade and technology sharing arrangements that no other American ally receives on equivalent terms.
Israeli technological development happened inside a heavily subsidized greenhouse built and maintained by American taxpayer money and political capital. Comparing that output to what Jewish diaspora intellectuals produced while navigating genuine discrimination, frequently without institutional support and often in active danger, is not a fair comparison. Einstein was not working with American aid packages. Freud was not operating out of a US funded research infrastructure. The diaspora intellectual tradition produced transformative work under genuinely adverse conditions. Whatever the genuine merits of Israeli technological output, it was produced inside one of the most heavily subsidized state projects in modern history. Hiding the subsidy in the footnotes is not a fair accounting.
“Gaza Is Not the Failure of Judaism, It’s the Failure of Antisemitism to Produce Anything Other Than Its Own Destruction”
Antisemites are not shooting journalists. Antisemites are not bombing hospitals. Antisemites are not blocking food convoys. Antisemites are not posting videos of themselves raping Palestinian women while other Israelis cheer them on social media. Antisemites are not shooting children carrying white flags.
The IDF is doing all of those things and its own soldiers are documenting and publishing the evidence themselves. The critic is asking you to believe that the people being killed, starved, raped, and filmed as trophies are somehow the cause of their own destruction. That is not an analytical position. That is the logic every perpetrator of ethnic cleansing has used in every instance in recorded history. The Native Americans provoked it. The Armenians provoked it. The Rohingya provoked it. The mechanism is identical every time. Name the victim as the threat, reframe the atrocity as defense, declare the perpetrator the real casualty.
Gaza is not the product of antisemitism. Gaza is the product of a state that has documented its own conduct in real time and whose civilian population has cheered every step of it.
“Hamas, and People Like You Who Support Them, Are the Reason Why Israel Exists and Why It Must Exist”
This is historically backwards and the documentation is not disputed. Israel actively cultivated Hamas in its early stages as a counter to the PLO and Yasser Arafat. The strategy was to fragment Palestinian political organization by elevating a religious faction against a secular nationalist one. This has been reported by the Wall Street Journal, acknowledged by former Israeli officials, and is part of the documented historical record.
Israel created the conditions for Hamas the same way the United States created the conditions for Al Qaeda by funding the Mujahideen against the Soviets in Afghanistan. You build an extremist faction as a tactical tool, lose control of it, and then use the monster you created to justify the next phase of what you wanted to do anyway.
Beyond that the broader claim inverts the timeline entirely. The Zionist settlement project, the Nakba, the occupation, the blockade, the systematic displacement, all of it predates Hamas by decades. Hamas is a response to Israeli conduct, not the cause of it. Burning down someone’s house and then citing their anger as justification for the arson is not a defense. It is a confession.
“Standing With Palestine Means Not Egging Them on in a Suicidal and Maximalist Quest. You Should Listen to Gazans Like Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib Who Advocate for Peaceful Coexistence”
The maximalist framing is applied to the wrong party. Israel is the nuclear armed state that has systematically expanded its territory through every decade of its existence, assassinated leaders it found inconvenient, bombed civilian infrastructure in multiple surrounding countries, conducted extrajudicial killings across international borders, and continued settlement expansion in direct defiance of every international legal ruling and American request to stop. That is the maximalist project. It has been consistent and documented since 1948.
The peaceful coexistence argument collapses against the behavioral record. Israel has violated every ceasefire agreement with documented regularity. Shooting journalists carrying white flags during a ceasefire is not a rogue incident. It is policy expressing itself. Peaceful coexistence requires a partner whose word means something and whose conduct between agreements does not include continuous settlement expansion, targeted assassination, and periodic military campaigns against a captive civilian population.
Asking Palestinians to pursue peaceful coexistence with Israel is asking them to sleep with a rattlesnake and trust that it will not strike because you asked it nicely. The Holocaust victim narrative that once provided Israel with a degree of international insulation is functionally exhausted. A state that bombs civilians during ceasefires, posts rape videos, and cheers its own atrocities from the border has spent that capital completely. What comes next for a nuclear armed state that has made itself a pariah while burning every diplomatic bridge is not a comfortable question. But it is the right one.
Antizionist. Antisemite. Token Jews. AI generated bigotry. These are not arguments. They are labels applied when the evidence becomes too uncomfortable to engage directly. The evidence in this case includes forty thousand dead, a civilian population cheering from the border, soldiers posting their own atrocities, a lobbying apparatus that has made American politicians afraid to say the obvious thing out loud, and a state that created the enemy it now uses to justify its own conduct.
Label the critic if it helps. The dead remain dead regardless of what you call the person counting them.
