Payday Super Checklist: 9 Things Australian Employers Must Do Before 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026, paying super quarterly is no longer an option. Every payday becomes a super deadline — and if contributions aren’t received by your employee’s fund within 7 business days, the ATO assesses the penalty automatically. No self-reporting. No grace period. Here is what you need to do before the deadline hits.

1. Check your clearing house is SuperStream v3-ready

Contact your clearing house or payroll software provider directly and ask whether they support SuperStream version 3 and the New Payments Platform (NPP) from 1 July 2026. Don’t assume — get a straight answer in writing. If they can’t confirm it, start evaluating alternatives now.

2. Move off the SBSCH before 30 June 2026

The ATO’s free Small Business Superannuation Clearing House closes permanently on 30 June 2026. If you’re still using it, you have weeks — not months — to transition to a SuperStream-compliant alternative. The ATO has published a transition checklist to help.

3. Verify every employee’s super fund details

Pull up every employee’s super fund name, USI (Unique Superannuation Identifier), and member number and verify them now. One wrong digit means a rejected contribution — and the 7-day clock keeps running while you fix it. SuperStream v3 introduces a Member Verification Request (MVR) to help catch errors before they happen.

4. Audit your payroll codes against the new QE definition

Super is no longer calculated on ordinary time earnings (OTE) — it’s calculated on qualifying earnings (QE). For most businesses nothing changes, but if you pay commissions — including commissions for work performed outside ordinary hours — those are now included. Cross-check your pay categories against the ATO’s QE definition before July 1.

5. Review existing SuperStream warning messages

Log into your clearing house and review recent payment messages. Any contribution currently passing with a warning flag may be outright rejected under the tighter SuperStream v3 standards from 1 July 2026. Identify and resolve those issues now, not mid-deadline.

6. Remap your cashflow for more frequent super payments

Weekly payroll means 52 super contributions per year instead of 4. Fortnightly means 26. Monthly means 12. This is a real cashflow shift — map the impact on your business bank balance now and adjust your financial planning accordingly. The ATO recommends starting this process immediately.

7. Update your new starter onboarding process

First contributions for new employees have an extended deadline of 20 business days — but only if you capture their super fund choice immediately. A slow or paper-based onboarding process will eat into that buffer fast. Make sure fund choice is captured electronically, on day one.

8. Tell your employees

Super will appear in employee accounts far more frequently from July. Most staff will welcome it — but high-income earners may have questions about contribution caps given the increased frequency. Get ahead of it with a brief internal communication before the change hits.

9. Get your records audit-ready — for every payday

Under Payday Super, the ATO assesses the SGC — you no longer self-report. That means your payroll and super payment records need to be clean, complete, and demonstrable for every single payday, not just at quarter end. If your records are fragmented across multiple systems, consolidate them before July 1.

This checklist covers the immediate actions. For the full picture — every rule, verified figure, and penalty explained with ATO sources — read the complete guide.
