Saloni didn’t expect much from the salon visit. It was just a lazy Sunday. She booked an oil massage out of impulse — or maybe quiet exhaustion. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt cared for without having to earn it.

She sank into the chair and exhaled — the kind of sigh your body lets out when it finally feels safe.

Her friend Riya, getting a pedicure nearby, asked, “You okay?”

Saloni smiled faintly. “Yeah… just realizing how long I’ve been performing. Even in love. Even at work. Always being the one who gets things done. Overthinking every message. Making sure everyone’s okay. Giving before anyone asks — and feeling guilty for taking up space.”

She paused. “I don’t think I ever learned how to rest without guilt.”

The warm oil moved across her scalp, slow and steady. For once, Saloni wasn’t managing anyone’s reaction. She wasn’t trying to be liked, understood, or impressive. She was just… there.

“I think somewhere along the way, I learned love had to be earned,” she said quietly. “That being useful meant being lovable.”

Riya didn’t interrupt. She just listened — and it felt new. A silence that didn’t need to be filled.

“I’m tired,” Saloni said, “of trying to be easy to love.”

Nothing dramatic happened that day. No big breakdown. But Saloni walked out lighter — not because something changed, but because for once, she received care without performing for it.

She didn’t have to earn it. She just let it in.
