Chapter 31

Original Text: Weapons are instruments of ill omen. Even inanimate things may despise them. Therefore, the one who desires the Way should not dwell in them. The noble man favors the left when at home, the right when at war. Hence, weapons are not the tools of the noble. They are used only when necessary. Peace and calm are paramount, do not glorify them. Glorifying war is rejoicing in killing. Those who delight in killing cannot attain the favor of the world. Thus, in joyous events, the left is honored; in mourning, the right. So, the lieutenant general stands to the left, the commander-in-chief to the right, because war is conducted as a funeral rite. When many are killed, it is to be mourned in sorrow. Heaven and Earth unite to shower sweet dew, and people, without command, live in balance. As names arise, we must learn to stop, knowing when to stop prevents peril. The Dao in the world is like a valley flowing into rivers and seas.

Black Book Decoding: “The Dao is nameless” = The Source Field exists beyond all conceptual structures. “The Uncarved Block cannot be subdued” = Even in its undefined state, the Field governs all emergent phenomena. Once we name, we localize. And localization = fragmentation = instability. Knowing where to stop = preventing phase collapse.
