L’Elefante nella Stanza di oggi 29 Dicembre 2025

Il Disastro del Sistema Sanitario Molisano.

Il drammatico caso della donna e della figlia quindicenne morte in provincia di Campobasso per una probabile intossicazione alimentare rattrista e indigna profondamente.

Da molisana, però, non posso ignorare la relazione evidente tra questa tragedia e la crisi ormai quasi ventennale della sanità regionale, commissariata da ben 16 anni. È l’elefante nella stanza che oggi nessuno può più fingere di non vedere.

In tutto questo tempo il commissariamento ha prodotto un solo risultato: lo smantellamento progressivo della sanità pubblica molisana. Ospedali chiusi, servizi essenziali come la guardia medica ridotti al minimo, un processo di privatizzazione sempre più spinto. Il Cardarelli — dove lavorano i medici coinvolti nel caso e ora indagati per omicidio colposo e lesioni colpose — è l’emblema di questa trasformazione e della mancanza di trasparenza che i cittadini denunciano da anni.

Dall’autunno scorso è stata avviata la procedura per trasferire il Cardarelli nell’edificio del Responsible Research Hospital (ex Cattolica), ufficialmente per potenziare la struttura e migliorare i servizi. Ma l’operazione è complessa, poco condivisa con la comunità locale e circondata da dubbi legittimi: molti temono che dietro la retorica del “potenziamento” si nasconda l’ennesimo passo verso lo smantellamento del pubblico.

Parliamo di un ospedale storico, punto di riferimento per l’intera regione. Il suo trasferimento avrà conseguenze concrete sulla vita di tutti i cittadini, ma queste conseguenze non sono state valutate né spiegate adeguatamente. E soprattutto non sono state fornite garanzie chiare sulla continuità e la qualità dei servizi una volta completato il trasferimento.

In questo contesto, suonano davvero fuori luogo le parole del Commissario alla sanità Marco Bonamico, secondo cui “c’è la differenza, più importante, fra curare un paziente e prendersene cura. Oggi all’ospedale di Campobasso curiamo le persone, ma non ce ne prendiamo cura.”

La verità è che oggi non si riesce neppure a garantire il minimo indispensabile. Dopo 16 anni di gestione centralizzata e inefficace, i molisani hanno perso fiducia in un sistema che non li ascolta e non li coinvolge, pur prendendo decisioni che incidono direttamente sulla loro salute e sulla loro vita.

Molise’s Healthcare Meltdown

The case of the death of the woman and her fifteen‑year‑old daughter in the province of Campobasso due to a probable food poisoning obviously saddens and outrages everyone.

But as someone from Molise, I cannot ignore the clear connection between the nearly twenty‑year crisis of our regional healthcare system — under government receivership for 16 years — and this latest tragic episode of malpractice (today’s elephant in the room).

Over all these years, the receivership has done nothing but dismantle Molise’s public healthcare: closing hospitals, cutting essential services like out‑of‑hours medical care to the bone, and pushing forward a process of privatizing hospital facilities. The Cardarelli Hospital itself — where the doctors involved in the case worked and are now under investigation for manslaughter and negligent injury — is a symbolic example of this shift and of the lack of transparency citizens have long complained about.

In practice, since last autumn a procedure has been launched to transfer the Cardarelli to the building of the Responsible Research Hospital (formerly the Cattolica), supposedly to strengthen the facility and provide better services in an environment more suitable for patients and healthcare workers. The operation is far from simple, and given the lack of involvement of the local community, it has raised many doubts among the public, who fear that the real purpose of the transfer is simply a disguised dismantling rather than an actual improvement.

This is, after all, a historic hospital for the city and for the entire region, and its relocation would have consequences for all citizens — consequences that have not been properly assessed, nor have adequate guarantees been provided regarding the continuity of services once the transfer is completed.

In this context, the statements made by the Commissioner for Molise’s healthcare system, Marco Bonamico, sound rather out of place. Speaking about the opportunity and necessity of the transfer, he said: “…there is the most important difference between treating a patient and taking care of them. Today at the Campobasso hospital we treat people, but we do not take care of them.”

No — the problem is that unfortunately you are not even able to take care of them, nor to guarantee the minimum level of care. And this is why, after 16 years, the people of Molise can no longer trust a centralized and ineffective management that neither listens to them nor involves them in decisions that will have direct consequences on their health and their lives.
