Hayden McDonald, Ambassador for SDG 3 (Australia) Innovative Education & Workforce Wellbeing Fellowship

The Icons of Change Global Secretariat proudly announces the appointment of Associate Professor Hayden McDonald as Ambassador for Sustainable Development Goal 3 — Good Health and Well-Being (Australia), under the Icons of Change Innovative Education & Workforce Wellbeing Fellowship.

An accomplished academic leader, researcher, consultant, and Fellow of CPA Australia, Associate Professor Hayden McDonald has pioneered curriculum innovation, industry partnerships, and evidence-based education that empower thousands of students and professionals to drive ethical, data-informed decision-making and meaningful societal progress. His work bridges rigorous scholarship with practical impact, equipping future leaders to address complex challenges through analytics, inclusive practices, and a commitment to human-centered outcomes.

As Director of Analytics Programs at Torrens University Australia since January 2022 (and Associate Professor since February 2020), Hayden has led the conceptualization, development, accreditation, and delivery of award-winning business analytics programs within the Business Technology School. He spearheaded the Master of Business Analytics, securing TEQSA accreditation and professional recognition from the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). This innovative program integrates real-world industry certifications, including a world-first subject embedding the IIBA Entry Certificate in Business Analysis exam into summative assessments, and embeds cutting-edge technologies from global partners such as AWS, Salesforce, SAS Institute, and IIBA, including SAP S/4HANA across analytics and accounting curricula.

Hayden pioneered a university-first multi-disciplinary Capstone subject with real-world simulations and industry mentors, and developed a novel immersive pedagogical approach placing students in internally operated projects for social enterprises and charities. Presented at the 2022 Social Enterprise World Forum Academic Symposium, this model delivers authentic experiential learning that connects academic theory to tangible social impact, fostering skills for ethical analytics and community benefit.

His PhD research at Griffith University examined management controls in the selection and implementation of employee wellbeing programs in Australian universities, influencing mental health initiatives in higher education and informing his ongoing scholarship on business model transformation, performance management, inclusion, social justice, and organizational wellbeing. Hayden’s leadership has garnered prestigious honors, including:

  • Academic Partner of the Year (Asia Pacific) 2024 from SAS, for excellence in building AI and technology-enabled workforces;
  • Business Analysis Innovation of the Year 2023 from IIBA Australia Chapter, for industry integration and graduate employability;
  • Pro-Vice Chancellor Research Award 2020 from Torrens University;
  • Contribution to Teaching Excellence 2019 from Griffith University.

With senior analyst experience providing strategic advice to hundreds of organizations worldwide, Hayden combines academic insight with business acumen. He mentors diverse academic teams across institutions and countries, chairs committees advancing competency development and innovative teaching, publishes in high-quality journals, and leads externally funded projects.

Through his transformative educational leadership, Hayden advances SDG 3 by preparing a skilled generation of analytics professionals to tackle health-related challenges, leveraging data to optimize wellbeing programs, promote inclusive workplaces, support mental health initiatives, and drive evidence-based improvements in organizational and community health outcomes.

For his sustained, visionary leadership in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 3 through award-winning curriculum innovation, immersive social-impact learning, industry-academia collaboration, and research on employee wellbeing and inclusive business practices, Associate Professor Hayden McDonald is proudly recognized as a 2026 Icon of Change.

As Ambassador for SDG 3 (Australia) under the Innovative Education & Workforce Wellbeing Fellowship, Associate Professor McDonald will support the Icons of Change platform by promoting cross-sector collaboration on analytics-driven health solutions, workforce upskilling for wellbeing, immersive learning models for social impact, and evidence-based approaches to organizational and community health. His mandate includes engaging educators, industry leaders, and policymakers; contributing to SDG-aligned forums; advancing inclusive education practices; and mentoring changemakers at the intersection of data analytics, education innovation, and wellbeing.

His appointment demonstrates a shared commitment to building healthier, more equitable societies, not through isolated efforts, but through empowered professionals, innovative education systems, ethical data use, and leadership that prioritizes wellbeing, inclusion, and sustainable societal progress.
