Beatrix Potter made rabbits look mischievous. And clever. Mine look like they read Darwin and took exactly the wrong notes.

They sit in the middle of the lawn in broad daylight, white tails flashing against green grass and rust-red mulch. No camouflage. No urgency. Sometimes one stretches so low it looks like it’s doing downward dog for the dandelions. Peter Rabbit would have at least chosen a vegetable patch. With a watering can nearby.

Mine just pause beside the flower beds as if waiting to see what natural selection recommends. Lucky for them I am no MacGregor.

One afternoon, my 6’1” teen came charging inside during plant-watering duty.

“There’s a dead rabbit by the bushes.”

Tongue out. Completely still.

Naturally, I refused to investigate. That is what husbands are for.

By morning, the corpse had vanished. No fur. No evidence. Either the rabbit had been stunned by heat, or terror had shut the whole operation down until the universe felt safer.

Later, I learned rabbits don’t really play dead. Their nervous system can simply shut the whole operation down during extreme duress.

Which, to be fair, is also how I respond to 5 p.m. meeting invites.
