Sagan’s Standard and Popper’s Falsifiability Principle

Sagan’s Standard
It is a principle of scientific skepticism popularized by Carl Sagan in his book Broca’s Brain(1979) and TV show Cosmos. The Sagan standard is the adage that “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence” (a concept abbreviated as ECREE).
Though this was made popular by Carl Sagan , it is actually a rewording of Laplace’s principle, which says that “the weight of evidence for an extraordinary claim must be proportioned to its strangeness”.
Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749–1827) was a monumental French mathematician and astronomer, often called the “Newton of France”. Laplace’s wording is considered more precise by some because it links the necessity of proof directly to the probabilistic “strangeness” (unlikelihood or implausibility) of the event being claimed.
- Purpose: It is used as a critical thinking tool to separate fact from fiction, reducing reliance on anecdotes or weak, subjective evidence.
- Examples: A claim like “I saw a cat” (ordinary) requires little evidence, while “I saw a dinosaur and also a werewolf” (extraordinary) requires rigorous, verifiable, and extraordinary proof.
Popper’s Falsifiability Principle
Karl Popper came up with the idea of falsifiability — the idea that if a theory’s scientific, you should be able to prove it wrong. He laid all this out in his 1934 book, The Logic of Scientific Discovery.
Popper wanted a clear line between science and stuff like pseudoscience. His point was simple: if a theory can’t possibly be tested or disproved by any real-world observation, it’s not science.
For Popper, the real action in science happens when people make bold predictions, then do their best to poke holes in them. That’s how science moves forward — not by stacking up evidence in favor, but by putting ideas on the line and seeing if they survive serious attempts to prove them wrong.
He also pushed back hard against induction, the old idea that you can prove a theory just by collecting enough supporting evidence. Popper said no, it only takes one solid counterexample to show a theory doesn’t hold up. Until that happens, any scientific theory is always provisional.
A well-known example is the statement “All swans are white” which is deemed scientific because it can be falsified by observing a single black swan.
