Euphoria Season 3: It’s Not Shock Value, It’s a Psychological Gangrene

As a psychologist, I see why viewers are recoiling from the new season. But what we dismiss as “trash” is actually the cold, honest logic of an untreated soul.

I am deliberately waiting for all episodes of Euphoria Season 3 to be released before I start watching. Not one episode a week, not in the background, not between chores. For me, this isn’t a show you just “turn on.” It’s a specific kind of internal work — an encounter with something raw, harsh, and profoundly human in its hopelessness.

Despite its visual brilliance and aesthetic inventiveness, I find the imagery of Euphoria quite “noisy.” At times, its monotony causes a near-physical nausea. It’s a strange sensation: everything flashes, screams, and glows, constantly trying to overstimulate you. If I didn’t view it as a chronicle of a psyche literally falling apart before our eyes, I would find it boring. I wouldn’t be able to handle the rhythm and over-saturation if it were just for the sake of form.

Much of the current criticism directed at the new season sounds like: “They just went for pure shock value,” or “They’re amping up the disgust for the sake of engagement.” I’m not saying that doesn’t exist in the industry — it certainly does. But here, that explanation feels superficial.

If we honestly look at the dynamics of these characters, what did we have at the end of the previous seasons? Adolescents at the peak of dramatic crises. People already making mostly poor decisions. People who already looked like psyches on the brink of overload.

Now, roughly five years have passed. Five years during which they haven’t healed, haven’t stopped, and haven’t gone through a proper path of integration for everything that happened to them. Most of them haven’t even come close to seeking professional help.

So, what were we supposed to see as a result? A magical personality upgrade? From where?

For me, this “darkness” that scares everyone now isn’t an attempt by the creators to make things intentionally uglier. It’s honest developmental logic. If you don’t treat a wound for years, if you don’t work with addiction, if you don’t learn to withstand your own psyche, and if you have no support — at a certain point, you are no longer looking at a “crisis.” You are looking at gangrene. And it doesn’t become prettier just because it’s hard for the viewer to watch.

That’s why I want to watch this season as a whole. For me, the question isn’t “Will I like it?” but rather “Do I have enough internal space to endure this without looking away?”

Because this is a terrifying truth about human nature: we are far more vulnerable, fragile, and dependent on help than we want to believe. And very often, “support from loved ones,” “pulling yourself together,” or “distracting yourself” is simply not enough. Sometimes, help must be professional. Otherwise, the psyche doesn’t stop at the point of a beautiful, cinematic breakdown. It continues to crack.

And there isn’t enough gold paint in the world to turn all those cracks into Kintsugi.
