Leveraging their existing EHR infrastructure, these HIEs enable connected providers to share patient information, often limited to those within the same healthcare system or EHR platform.
4. Nationwide HIEs Nationwide HIE initiatives aim to bridge regional and state boundaries, allowing data to follow patients wherever they receive care. Organizations like the CommonWell Health Alliance and Carequality are working to build interoperability frameworks that connect different HIE networks, promoting a seamless, nationwide flow of patient data.
5. Specialized HIEs Some HIEs focus on specific types of data or cater to particular patient populations or use cases, such as behavioral health, public health reporting, or data for research. These specialized HIEs address unique needs around data exchange, enabling more focused data sharing beyond general clinical information.

HIEs improve care coordination by providing healthcare providers with access to a more complete view of a patient’s health history, regardless of where previous treatments took place.
