Whoop Life, First Impressions
First impressions: Whoop on my other wrist
I now wear two fitness trackers simultaneously, which is either very committed or very confused — I haven’t decided.
On my left wrist: a Garmin Fenix 8. On my right: a Whoop band, courtesy of a Chase Sapphire Reserve perk — one free year of the $359/yr Whoop Life subscription. I would not have bought it. That price, every year, for a device with no screen? Hard pass.
But I tried it, and it’s good. Better than I expected.
The small stuff first: the band is subtle, the battery lasts long enough not to annoy me, and the clip-on wireless charger is genuinely clever. The app felt cluttered until it didn’t. The AI coaching is more useful than Strava’s habit of congratulating you for showing up.
The real value is in Recovery guidance. Whoop weights HRV at 70%, resting heart rate (captured specifically during slow-wave sleep, not averaged across the whole night) at 20%, and sleep performance at 10%. It’s not the crude “you slept 7.5 hours, nice job” that most trackers give you. It tells me I’m carrying a sleep deficit into the weekend and that my rest days are so passive I’m not hitting minimum strain — two things I half-suspected but hadn’t quantified. Knowing it doesn’t fix it, but it removes the excuse.
Here’s the tension I keep sitting with: a study of 11,914 Whoop subscribers found that higher wear frequency correlates with better health outcomes — lower RHR, longer sleep, more activity. The uncomfortable question is whether Whoop produces those outcomes, or whether disciplined people just wear their trackers more. Cause and effect are genuinely hard to untangle here.
Will it replace my Garmin? No. When I’m running intervals I want GPS, pace, and a coaching plan. Whoop knows it can’t replace a sports watch and doesn’t try.
At $359/year out of pocket I’d never justify it. Free, it’s taught me something.
