Or who is forcing Europe to reborn, and why
It is now offcial: the United States considers Europe an adversary, not an ally!
A 160-page official report calls the US administration a “threat” to the international order.
On Tuesday, French President Macron said it without diplomacy: “The strategy of bowing down to the Americans is not working, and the Trump administration is seeking the disintegration of the European Union.”
Also on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov savored the moment: “Trump has put the Europeans in their place.”
Ladies and gentlemen, our generation witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall and communism. We now have the misfortune of witnessing the collapse of the order that followed. But it would be extraordinary if we, who have experienced both events, were also to witness the rebirth of Europe! Because Europe deserves it.
I invite you on a journey through the history of the last week, through great literature and through Dostoevsky’s inverted mirror — where you will discover that the “idiot” is no longer the pure character in a corrupt world, but a corrupt character in a world that is trying to remain healthy.
Under the threat of destruction
The 160-page report from the 2026 Munich Security Conference, entitled “Under destruction,” does something unprecedented in postwar history: it names the United States as a threat to the international order.
“Most of Europe is watching with horror as the United States falls into competitive authoritarianism. More than 80 years after its creation, the post-war international order is now in the process of being destroyed.”
The Munich conference opened with this document on the table. Shortly before, Emmanuel Macron had warned in an interview with several European publications that the Trump administration is “openly anti-European” and seeks the “disintegration” of the European Union.
“When there is a clear act of aggression, I don’t think we should bow our heads or try to reach an agreement. We have been trying this strategy for months. It doesn’t work.”
Also on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the European Union “has no right to intervene in the peace negotiations, nor is it capable of doing so.” And, with the smile of someone who relishes European weakness, he added: “President Trump has put the Europeans in their place, he has put Zelensky in his place, and he is now asking them to comply.”
On the same day and practically in the same sentence, Europe was attacked by its historic ally and humiliated by its declared aggressor. A perfect sandwich between the illusion of an eternal alliance and the certainty of a perpetual adversary.
The “Prince of Queens”, a complete idiot
To understand how we got here, we must go back to a book that is a century and a half old.
In 1869, Dostoevsky published “The Idiot”.
Prince Myshkin, the protagonist, is a man of almost saintly goodness, incapable of doing harm, sincere to the point of naivety, who enters a world dominated by greed, vanity, and cynicism. Those around him do not know how to deal with such a man; first they adore him, then they exploit him, and finally they destroy him. In Dostoevsky’s work, the idiot is the only pure man in a corrupt society, and the tragedy is that society does not accept him as he is.
Today, everything is the opposite!
The world is not ruled by Myshkin, but by a man without principles beyond his own glorification. A man who admires tyrants because they are what he dreams of being: autocrats without any legal or constitutional constraints.
A man who treats allies as vassals, islands as mere real estate transactions, wars as bargaining chips, and democracy as an obstacle.
Dostoevsky wrote about Prince Myshkin, the “pure idiot,” destroyed by the world. America produced the Prince of Queens, the idiot who destroys the world.
And there is another irony that Dostoevsky would probably have relished: the novel is Russian! The most subtle analysis of purity crushed by corruption comes from the very civilization that the Kremlin has confiscated and that the global idiot now courts with an affinity that his own national security report betrays. A document in which Russia, the aggressor, does not even appear in a dedicated section.
The tribune understands faster than the salon
A year ago, on the same stage in Munich, US Vice President JD Vance explained to Europeans, with the arrogance of a colonial prefect, that Europe’s problem is not Russia, not China, but itself. That Europe is destroying its civilization through censorship and immigration. Nothing about the criminal Putin! Nothing about the children deported from Ukraine!
The room fell silent then, stunned by the audacity displayed by Peter Thiel’s disciple. Diplomats took note, ministers bit their lips, and then everyone moved on, hoping that if they paid more to NATO, they would be left alone.
That was not the case! In the meantime, there have been tariff increases, threats over Greenland, disparaging remarks about the courage of European soldiers in Afghanistan, and exclusion from the negotiating table for Ukraine.
A year of humiliation, and President Macron now says unequivocally: “We have the Chinese tsunami on the trade front and we have minute-by-minute instability on the American side. These two crises represent a profound shock, a rupture for Europeans.”
At the San Siro stadium, during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, 65,000 spectators spontaneously did what their leaders had not had the courage to do for a year: they told the truth.
The boos directed at the US vice president were the honest response of people around the world to American politics. And at the Super Bowl, a Puerto Rican-American sang entirely in Spanish on America’s biggest stage, holding up a ball inscribed with “Together We Are America.”
The response from Florida: “One of the worst ever! Nobody understands a word this guy is saying.” No one understands him anymore. That’s the drama, the “prince” summed up in a single sentence.
Russia, a lamb, Europe, an aggressor!
Europe must finally admit that in the United States’ national security strategy, the aggressor is not Russia. The aggressor is Europe! Europe with its “censorship,” its “migration,” its “end of civilization” — Vance’s formula, now adopted as official doctrine.
In contrast, Russia, which has invaded a sovereign country, deported children, and threatened with nuclear weapons — Russia does not even have a dedicated section, but Europe does!
Josep Borrell said it clearly: what Vance did in Munich and what the national strategy confirmed “is a political declaration of war against the EU.” And Macron confirms: “In the coming months, the US will certainly attack us on digital regulation.”
And, of course, Lavrov completes the picture: “Europe is not even capable of participating in negotiations for a war that is being waged on its own continent.”
Once we accept these statements, there is no room for ambiguity.
Europe is not only obliged to defend itself, but also to be reborn. Militarily, so that it no longer depends on a “big brother.” Technologically, so that it is no longer the digital colony of the same oligarchs who write the speeches of the prince of Queens. Economically, to transform the world’s largest single market into an engine of innovation, not just consumption. And socially, to confirm the European model of solidarity, the only one in the world where access to health, education, and social protection are legal rights, not privileges.
The new American elite is above the law
But the “demolition strategy,” as the report calls it, should not be read as a declaration of war against America. That would be a fatal mistake.
Not all Americans are MAGA. Millions of Americans are watching what is happening to them with the same horror.
America is in a profound democratic, cultural, moral, and intellectual decline, and the revelations in the Epstein case have only just begun. And they show us an endless abyss!
The world’s largest democracy has created a political, financial, and technological elite that is above the law. The most powerful people in America, presidents, former presidents, billionaires, fund managers, frequented a sex trafficking network that everyone knew about, and yet no one did anything. Not because there was no evidence, but because those involved were too powerful to be touched.
Unfortunately, the monstrosities we are learning about are only the beginning.
It is very possible that at some point we will realize that Epstein is small fry compared to what the “nursery of geniuses” in Silicon Valley is hiding. That it is not only the young and brilliant minds of twenty-something entrepreneurs that drive ingenious startups forward, but also their fresh meat, so highly prized by the “visionary founders” in black T-shirts who stand behind them, literally and figuratively.
If Silicon Valley’s “recipe for success” ever explodes in court, America and the whole world will be shocked to discover the betrayals, suicides, and misdeeds of the Big Tech mafia, which uses billions to buy ideas, minds, and bodies — with the sole purpose of exploiting them, not necessarily in that order. We are at the beginning of the revelations, not the end.
Of course, Europe also has its corrupt and lawless individuals.
But the difference — and here the nuance is important — is that in Europe there is still rule of law, while in America there is a lot of bargaining. In Europe, a former French prime minister is convicted, a former Italian prime minister is on trial, and an European commissioner is arrested.
In America, the man accused of fraud, sexual abuse, and conspiracy becomes president. They are two worlds on the same planet.
Europe is our home
When civilization is in danger, we return to its roots. And civilization, wherever you look, is European!
Democracy was born in Athens, and human rights were written in Paris. The rule of law was conceived in London, and social protection in Berlin. America imported these ideas, amplified them, industrialized them, and now it is demolishing them. It’s like the idiot demolishing his house and then blaming his neighbors for not having water.
Europe is not weak, it is just asleep and lacking direction.
Four hundred and fifty million people, the second largest economy on the planet, the largest single market in the world.
Yes, it lags behind in technology, that’s true. But let’s look at what the US has done with its technological advantage: it has turned it into digital feudalism. Five or six oligarchs control 70% of Europe’s digital infrastructure, interfere in elections, dictate what is news and what is not for three billion people, and the Washington administration, instead of regulating this obscene concentration of power, serves it to the full!
The US Vice President threatened Europe in Paris that regulation “will kill the industry.” However, the translation from English is different: “your rights threaten our profits”.
Europeans have the GDPR, used as the global standard for data protection. They have the AI Act, the first legislation that attempts to put artificial intelligence at the service of people, not shareholders.
Europe regulates because it understands something that America has forgotten: technology without ethics is not progress, it is just another form of slavery with a user-friendly interface.
We know how it is
Europeans can and must stand in solidarity with ordinary Americans. They can and must because they know better than anyone else on earth what an idiot in power looks like. They survived the Kaiser, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Franco, Ceaușescu. They rebuilt from rubble more times than any other civilization.
Democracy is neither eternal nor so strong! And the Europeans can say, without arrogance but firmly: we know! We have been through this. And the lesson is that democracy is not defended with optimism, but with institutions, laws and the courage to use them.
Munich can be the zero moment of a Europe that no longer asks America for permission to do anything. It is not by imitating America that Europe can progress, but by its opposite: by creating a pole of civilization in a world that is becoming barbaric.
Europe is everything that America cannot be. And it can offer what America not only refuses, but also cannot reach: a model of society in which freedom is not only the freedom of the rich, in which the law also applies to the most powerful, in which technology serves the citizen.
It is not a utopia, but is exactly what has been built on the old continent in the last 80 years. Europe just needs the courage to defend its own work.
How sad that it took an idiot for Europe to remember why it is considered the cradle of civilization.
