How I Landed a Research Internship at DRDO-ISSA in My third semester?

Securing an internship at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is a dream for many engineering students in India. For me, this dream became a reality during my 3rd semester when I joined the Institute of System Studies and Analytics (ISSA).
If you are a sophomore looking to break into defense research, here is the exact strategy and roadmap I followed.
1. The Foundation: Building a Research-Ready Skillset
DRDO labs like ISSA don’t just look for coders; they look for researchers. Before applying, I ensured my technical stack was robust:
- Core Languages: I focused on mastering C++ and Python, which are the backbone of most defense simulations.
- Specialization: I dove deep into Machine Learning and Computer Vision. Having a specialization in projects is very much necessary and also skillset of AI/ML which is raising demand in market and technology — demonstrated that I could handle complex image data.
- Academic Standing: I maintained a good GPA, not great but try to maintain above 8+ :))which is crucial as DRDO often uses academic merit as a primary filter.
2. Strategic Lab Targeting
DRDO has over 50 labs. You must target the one that matches your skills. I chose ISSA (Delhi) because their work in System Studies and Analytics aligned perfectly with my interest in Satellite Image Processing.
Tip: If you are into AI/ML, look at labs like ISSA, CAIR, or SAG.
3. The Application Process (The “Cold” Approach)
Since I applied during my 3rd semester, I had to be proactive:
- The Resume: I tailored my resume to highlight my previous research experience and my Hackathon achievements to prove I could perform under pressure.
- The Paperwork: I secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from my college. You can approach to your training and placement cell for this :)) This is a non-negotiable requirement for any government internship.
- The Outreach: I submitted my application including my CV, a cover letter explaining my interest in Maritime Satellite Imagery, and my marksheet to the Director/HRD coordinator at ISSA.
4. The Internship Experience: What I Do at ISSA
Currently, my work involves building end-to-end ML pipelines for maritime satellite imagery. This includes:
- Applying clustering and classification to identify enemy ships.
- Using feature extraction to match images across massive datasets.
- Contributing to strategic simulations that support defense intelligence.
5. Final Tips for Aspiring Interns
- Start Early: Don’t wait until your 3rd year. Building a research profile in your 1st and 2nd year (like my work with ACM) makes you a standout candidate. You can also approach to the labs offline for document submission. It makes them easier to understand you better!
- Focus on Accuracy: In defense, a 1% difference matters. Highlighting my 90% accuracy in sentiment analysis and 92% OCR accuracy in past projects proved I value precision.
- Showcase Innovation: Awards like the Outstanding Research Award from ACM serve as “social proof” of your capabilities.

Best of Luck!!
