Is Brahmaputra River a Sacred Lifeline or a Growing Conflict?

Do you know that Brahmaputra river have different name as it flows through different region?

The rivers are not mere water bodies; they are lifelines to economies, states, and even international relations. When I was conducting research on Brahmaputra, it dawned on me that it serves as both lifeline and bone of contention: a lifeline for trade, agriculture, and hydropower, while a source of geopolitical tension. Flowing through China, India, and Bangladesh, the river and its resources sustain millions of livelihoods and at the same time instigate differences pertaining mostly to the issue of possible Chinese dam building in the upper reaches, which can significantly affect the water flow to the downstream countries.

This made me ponder, is Brahmaputra a unifying force or a divisive force? Can its potential for economic growth outweigh the conflicting issues with it? I will discuss in this blog the role of the river in trade, its geopolitical significance, and the emerging issues of water control among the three nations.

Water Conflicts On The Rise

As I pursued research on the Brahmaputra River, I came to understand the river’s importance as a lifeline and its role as a significant geopolitical flashpoint among China, India, and Bangladesh. While China raises upstream dams for concerns about water control, droughts, and floods are being caused downstream on the countries concerned. On the contrary, India is building counter-dams, strengthening its relationships with Bangladesh, and lobbying for international regulations, while Bangladesh is having a tough time managing water scarcity and floods due to its limited status. Experts see some potential in mutual cooperation: treaty frameworks, sharing of information, and joint disaster management. But will these nations unite and cooperate or allow water to become an issue of contention?
