Yay AND Neigh: My Top 5 Disney Horses 🐴
2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, so what better time to celebrate some of the most iconic stallions and mares ever brought to screen and revisit some four-hooved Disney legends?
The Disney Animated Canon™️ has brought us dozens of lovable horses through the years (because honestly, what’s a prince without his noble steed?), so I’ve been spoilt for choice in this category. However, I’ve selected my top 5 most memorable candidates, based on personality, looks, and — most importantly — icon status. So saddle up, it’s time for some horseplay.
5. Mayor Brian Winddancer

“You say justice is dead? I say… NEIGH!!!!”
“Who??” You may ask. Well, if you haven’t yet seen Zootropolis 2 (or Zootopia 2 if you’re stateside), now is your time to trot to it. It’s got 91% on Rotten Tomatoes for Pete’s sake. This resplendent specimen had to make the list, seeing as he is one of the few Disney horses with a fully formed personality, an important role in the plot of the film (even if a hindrance), and LOOK AT THE HAIR. Also, what other horse gets to wear a suit? Come on, now.
Voiced by venerable VA Patrick Warburton, Mayor Winddancer is an actor-turned-politician, inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s set up as a puppet ruler to charm the citizens with his stallion swagger while the criminal underworld carries out its nefarious schemes. Corrupt? Yes. Fabulous? Also yes. This guy’s got star horsepower.
4. Philippe

“This can’t be right! Where have you taken us Philippe?” ARE YOU KIDDING ME.
Justice 👏 for 👏 Philippe 👏. This put-upon horse JUST wanted to get Maurice to the inventor’s fair in one piece. He tried to avoid that shady shortcut through the woods, but NO. Instead, due to his crazy old master and the “she can do no wrong” Belle, our poor steed has to endure:
- Being swarmed by bats
- Almost falling off a cliff
- Being chased by wolves
- Trekking back and forth to deliver people from the village to the Beast’s castle like a bloody Uber driver
And not a word of thanks. This horse deserves a medal and a five-star rating.
3. Frou-Frou

The grandest horsey in the Easter Parade
The Aristocats is one of my favourite Disney films, and the horse representation here does not disappoint. Just look at that bonnet. She’s style, she’s class. And she’s kick-ass (literally).
Beneath Frou-Frou’s ladylike demeanor and impeccable manners, she’s got the fire in her, and she absolutely steps up to the plate when our feline friends need her most. Yup, the one mistake the butler-turned-catnapper Edgar made was telling Frou-Frou his secret plan to dispatch of her madame’s beloved kittens. She understood the assignment and kicked that butler’s sorry ass all the way to Timbuktu. Never mess with a French horse.
2. Pegasus

Name a more iconic trio
Yes, he has wings, so technically he’s an upgrade over a horse, but I think we can agree that Pegasus deserves a high ranking on this list. Not only is he Hercules’ valiant steed, but he’s also his best bud, training partner, and wingman. These two go WAY back. Back to when they were wee babbies and Zeus first created Pegasus out of clouds.

AAAW.
Pegasus is one of the most anthropomorphised horses, with human qualities (he can cross his arms in annoyance to great comic effect) and puppy-like charms. He’s staunchly loyal to Herc and revels in all his triumphs; he also wears his (unimpressed) emotions clearly on his face, and puts Meg through her paces to prove herself worthy of dating his godlike pal, including ensuring her free lifts are full of turbulence. There really is no Hercules without Pegasus — not to mention how much slower his hero’s journey would have been without his private flying machine.
1. Maximus

I’m scared and impressed
Maximus is the pinnacle of Disney horses, no question. The *Tangled* creators absolutely peaked here. He has the heroism of a classic Disney prince’s horse, the focus of a top mercenary, the instincts of a hunting dog, and the comic timing of a silent movie star.
The Flynn Rider / Maximus relationship is textbook enemies-to-lovers: well, maybe not lovers, more like reluctant accomplices. While Flynn (or should we say Eugene) wants to live out his swashbuckling fugitive dreams, this horse has NO time for tomfoolery. He’s laser-focused. He spends most of the film hunting down our rogueish hero, leading a troupe of human soldiers with his superior intellect (involving much eye-rolling).

Come on, lads.
He only switches sides when Rapunzel butters him up and convinces him to help them so she can see her precious floating lanterns. The guy isn’t made of stone. It doesn’t stop him from taking a good few well-placed digs at Flynn along the way, though, the legend.
Special mention must go to the way he uses his front legs to push aside branches: it’s nothing short of iconic. It’s up there with gobbling up Flynn Rider’s wanted poster, using his teeth like an electric shredder. Maximus had maximum charisma.
Well, there you have it: my top 5 Disney horses. And before you @ me, no, I’m not including Pixar, and YES, I know that there are lots of others I could have mentioned. Why don’t you channel your potential indignation into commenting which horses I could have included and why? Go on, you know you want to whinny on about it. In the meantime, Happy Year of the Horse!
