Nobody warned me it would be this addictive.

I arrived at ATC Fishing Village just after 10 PM on a Tuesday — on a tip from someone who said “just go at night, trust me.” The humidity was lower. The crowd was thin. The pond was lit up under fluorescent lights, and the silence was punctuated only by the occasional splash of a line hitting the water.

I stayed for three hours.

Prawning — Singapore’s Quiet Obsession

If you haven’t done prawning in Singapore, here’s the short version.

You hire a rod, get handed chicken hearts as bait, pick a spot around the pond, and wait.

When something tugs and it does tug you pull. And there it is: a live freshwater prawn, fighting at the end of your line.

Rods and bait are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own. There are 3 prawning ponds and 1 crayfish/yabby pond.

After your session, you take your catch to the BBQ area. Ask the counter staff for charcoal and salt. Cook them yourself, right there, minutes after catching them.

Nothing from a restaurant tastes like that.

The Setup at Jurong Hill

The ponds are covered with a shelter, so you can prawn even when it rains. There’s music on the radio.

That detail music on the radio says everything about the vibe.

This is not an Instagram-optimised experience. There are no mood lights or designer interiors. It’s a proper kampung-style setup: basic, laid-back, and quiet with a nice ambience.

Plastic stools. Rods propped against the edge. Regulars who’ve clearly been coming for years, doing their own thing without any fuss.

I was a complete beginner. Some of the regulars were quite friendly and helped when they saw me struggling. One gentleman repositioned my bait without being asked and went back to his own rod without another word.

That’s the culture here. Unhurried. Generous. Completely unpretentious.

The Tagged Prawn Worth Knowing About

There’s a Tagged Prawn Rewards system where you can win $2, $5, $10, or 1 free hour of prawning based on the colour of the tag attached to the prawn.

I didn’t catch a tagged one. The person two spots down from me did, and the quiet celebration a small fist pump, a grin was one of the more genuinely joyful moments of my entire Jurong week.

Flexible Hours: A Genuinely Good Policy

If you can’t finish your hours in one session, you can return within 3 months to use them up. No need to finish all 3 hours in one go.

There’s currently a promotion where you get 5.5 hours for $55 incredibly affordable. If you can’t finish the hours, you can return another time to complete them.

That flexibility changes the whole experience. There’s no pressure to stay longer than you want. No guilt about leaving early. You bank your hours and come back when the mood strikes.

Go at Night: This Is Not Negotiable

Going at night is highly recommended since it’s very humid and hot in the afternoon.

Singapore’s afternoon heat is not kind to outdoor activities. The evening version of ATC Fishing Village cooler, quieter, lit up against the dark is a different experience entirely.

Weekends get really crowded, so a weekday visit is better if you enjoy the peace and quiet.

Tuesday night at 10 PM had about eight people spread across the ponds. Well spaced. No noise. Just lines in the water and the occasional radio song drifting past.

There’s a version of Singapore built for visitors the gleaming towers, the curated attractions, the perfectly air-conditioned everything.

And then there’s a pond in Jurong, open all night, where a man with twenty years of prawning experience will reposition your bait without being asked and say nothing about it.

Both versions are real.
