⚙️ Gear Corner

This week’s gear discussions are featured in our Community Vibe section below, where experienced triathletes share practical advice on swim goggles, bike storage solutions, nutrition products, and aero upgrades.

💬 Community Vibe

I’m afraid of the swim for one reason only

I’m pretty decent at every discipline and my training for the full IM is spot on. I have one weakness though. I wear contact lenses and I’m terrified of losing them during the water battle. In case of losing even one, I will be completely disoriented and disappointed. I will have, of course, two pairs at T1 and T2 but I need some tips to survive the swim with both lenses on.

GotRektDuh

EXPERT ADVICE

Wearing goggles that fit snugly is crucial to protect your lenses during the swim. Consider using daily disposable lenses to minimize the impact if they do get lost, and ensure your goggles have a good seal by testing them in training swims.

ACTION STEP

This week, practice swimming in a pool with your contact lenses and goggles on, focusing on adjusting the fit to ensure a watertight seal.

COMMUNITY

“Try wearing a swim cap over your goggles for added security; it can help keep them in place during the swim start chaos.”

— TriRunner42, New York

Are you paying attention to clean-label endurance products?

I’m from Brazil and currently training for long-course (70.3 now, full Ironman next). I’ve been obsessed with dialing in endurance, especially the nutrition side after a few “strong legs, weak stomach” race days. Are you paying attention to clean-label endurance products, or is performance all that matters to you? I’ve been wondering how many of us actually care about ingredient quality (natural sources, no artificial stuff, gut-friendly formulas) vs just carb numbers per hour.

Sure_Ideal_2148, Brazil

EXPERT ADVICE

Balancing performance and clean ingredients is crucial. Many athletes find success with gut-friendly, natural products that minimize gastrointestinal distress while still meeting energy needs.

ACTION STEP

Experiment with a clean-label endurance gel during a long training session this week to observe its effects on your performance and digestion.

COMMUNITY

“Switching to natural gels reduced my stomach issues significantly while still maintaining my energy levels in long races.”

Saturday Triathlons in Southern UK

Hi all, got my first Sprint at the end of May on Bank Holiday Monday, and would like to get some more races in after this and hopefully build up the distance. My biggest issue though is I cannot race on a Sunday due to family commitments (hence the BHM race in May) — any events people would recommend? I’ve trawled the main sites that have races listed but the vast majority seem to be on a Sunday!

trips-sleepy-forgot

EXPERT ADVICE

Finding Saturday triathlons can indeed be a challenge, but focusing on local club races or smaller regional events might yield more options. Additionally, reaching out to local triathlon clubs could uncover lesser-known races that fit your schedule.

ACTION STEP

Contact your local triathlon club or visit their website to inquire about upcoming Saturday events.

COMMUNITY

“I faced the same issue and found that local clubs often have Saturday races or even some unique weekday events.”

How did others with vision problems handle their first triathlon?

I’m training for my first 70.3. I wear regular glasses every day, I have no problem with that. They’re annoying in sports, I hate them. I hate that disability. I have prescription glasses for swimming and sunglasses for outdoors. And yes, when it rains and the sun isn’t out, I train with my office glasses… which I hate. My plan is: prescription swimming goggles, I don’t take them off until I get to the bike where I put on my prescription sunglasses and then I go straight to the finish line.

Ok-Assumption5742

EXPERT ADVICE

It can be challenging to manage vision correction in triathlons. Many athletes use prescription goggles for swimming and switch to prescription sunglasses for the cycling and running segments, as planned. Ensuring your eyewear is secure and comfortable is crucial.

ACTION STEP

This week, test your planned eyewear transition in a training session to ensure a smooth change between swimming and biking.

COMMUNITY

“I found that investing in high-quality prescription goggles and sunglasses made a world of difference in my race-day performance.”

Bike dilemma

I’m deciding between two road bikes for training/racing, as I don’t have the budget to buy a separate TT bike just for races. If you had to choose between these two, what direction would you go? Canyon Endurance CF SLX 7Di2 or Trek Madone SL5 w/ wheelset swapped to carbon Pro? For context, I’m a short-torsoed female with an unusual inseam (36"), and I am finding that a lot of frames won’t work with my body geometry.

PNWBoilermaker

EXPERT ADVICE

Given your unique body geometry, the Canyon Endurance CF SLX 7Di2 might offer more flexibility with its endurance geometry, which can often accommodate a wider range of body types. However, a professional bike fitting is crucial to ensure optimal comfort and performance.

ACTION STEP

Schedule a bike fitting session to test both models and assess which frame better accommodates your specific measurements and comfort requirements.

COMMUNITY

“I faced a similar choice last year and found that frame geometry can make a huge difference. Always prioritize the fit over the brand.”

Speedmax best drink / fuel / tools storage?

I’ve just got a Speedmax and have a few 70.3 and full IM this year. Just wanting to know the best options for storing some tools / space inner tubes / etc, 3 or 4 water bottles and a bottle full of gel — not compromising aerodynamics too much but doing it affordably. I’ve seen people recommend 3d printed bottle holders on Etsy etc but I’m not sure which are good / which aren’t.

The_Rum_Guy

EXPERT ADVICE

For storing tools and nutrition on your Speedmax while maintaining aerodynamics, consider using a combination of bento boxes, frame-integrated storage, and behind-the-saddle bottle cages. Bento boxes allow quick access to gels and bars, while frame-integrated storage can neatly house tools and spare tubes without disrupting airflow.

ACTION STEP

This week, research and purchase a frame-integrated storage solution that fits your Speedmax model to optimize your aero setup.

COMMUNITY

“3D printed bottle holders can be great if they’re well-designed, but always check reviews and fitment for your specific bike model.”

Lenticular disc wheels — best bang for buck?

What is your take on upgrading to full disc rear wheel? What is the best bang for Buck in your opinion? It seems hard for me to find good deals on used ones….

ScienceElectronic341

EXPERT ADVICE

Upgrading to a full disc rear wheel can significantly improve your bike’s aerodynamics, especially in flat or time trial settings. For the best value, consider brands like Flo Cycling or HED, which offer high performance at more accessible prices. Always check reviews and ask for recommendations from fellow triathletes.

ACTION STEP

This week, evaluate your current bike setup and identify any specific requirements or preferences you have for a disc wheel, then research top-rated models within your budget.

COMMUNITY

“I upgraded to a disc wheel last year and noticed a substantial difference in speed during my time trials. Keep an eye on local triathlon forums; you might find great deals on used gear.”
