The Same Knock, Every day
We lived on Mark Twain Ave. when we were staying with my Pepa, something made sure we heard it… at the exact same time.
By this time, my mom and stepdad had already split up and gone their separate ways. Years went by without anything paranormal happening. It was quiet… normal, for once. That all changed when I was 13. That’s when we moved to Bakersfield, California, where my blood family lives. We ended up staying at my Pepa’s house on Mark Twain Avenue. It felt like a fresh start at first — new place, familiar family, nothing weird… yet.
One day, my mom and my older cousin were in the first bedroom to the right of the hallway, the one closest to the living room. They were testing out the bed, trying to decide who wanted that room. It was broad daylight. Out of nowhere, the bed started shaking. At first, they thought it was an earthquake — because, well… California. That’s the first thing your mind goes to. They both jumped up and ran out of the room, a little panicked, asking everyone if we felt it too. I remember just looking at them, confused.
“Felt what?” I asked. They looked at each other, already freaked out. “So you didn't feel that?” my mom said. “The shaking? An earthquake? Maybe an aftershock? Anything?” I shook my head. “No… I didn’t feel anything. I didn’t even see anything shake. You’re freaking me out.”
That’s when my mom, dead serious, goes: “There is a freaking ghost in there.” My older cousin didn’t even hesitate. “Yeah… definitely don’t want that bedroom. We all kind of laughed it off after that… or at least tried to. The rest of the day went on like normal. Nothin else happened. Until the next day.
Again — broad daylight. It was me, my mom, my older cousin, and my cousin who’s around my age (she’s actually my best friend now). She’s hard of hearing, but she can still hear a little. We were all in the living room when we suddenly heard a knock. Not just anywhere — on the wall above the fireplace. It was clear and solid like someone was deliberately knocking from the other side. We all froze. This time, there was no blaming an earthquake. We ended up calling Pepa and telling him what happened. And the way he responded didn’t help at all. He just casually said, “Yeah… that house is haunted. Don’t worry though, they’re harmless.
Harmless? I still don’t know if he was joking or not. But here’s the thing — that knock didn’t just happen once. Apparently, it would happen at the exact same time… in the exact same spot… every single day. And that’s when we realized — Whatever was in that house didn’t just come out at night.
