Never Lie by Freida McFadden: A Psychological Thriller Built on Secrets

Score: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This article is divided into two sections. The first contains an overall book review while the second is a spoiler-based analysis.

Overall Book Review:

The novel’s compelling central premise and fast-paced narrative follow newlyweds Tricia and Ethan as they move into the abandoned house of renowned psychiatrist Dr Adrienne Hale. There, Tricia uncovers the events that led to the psychiatrist’s mysterious disappearance.

Readers are invited into the disturbing inner world of Dr. Hale’s patients, whom she appears to treat with steady professionalism and quiet control. However, make no mistake: Dr. Hale is far from an ordinary psychiatrist driven solely by empathy. Beneath her polished reputation lies a woman deeply concerned with public perception, particularly as her bestselling psychology books continue to shape the image she has carefully built for herself.

The novel constantly prompts the reader to question whose version of the story they are willing to believe, and it is this careful interplay of ambiguity and doubt that keeps the reader hooked.

Spoilers-Based Analysis:

The narrator, Tricia turns out to be an unreliable narrator in the story. Her real name is Patricia, and it is further revealed that Dr. Hale does not necessarily come across as empathetic; rather, she is portrayed as exceptionally sharp and perceptive. For three years, she recognizes that Patricia has been lying about the circumstances surrounding her survival of a murder in a remote cabin. Patricia’s story strikes Dr. Hale as deeply suspicious, and she concludes that Patricia was responsible for killing not only her fiancé, but also her best friend, with whom he had been having an affair. A third death appears to have been collateral damage.

Instead of alerting the authorities, Dr. Hale uses Patricia’s carefully crafted tale of innocence as material for her novel. She further exploits her understanding of Patricia’s psychology to manipulate her into kidnapping EJ (Edward Jamison). EJ is Dr. Hale’s patient who secretly records a video of Dr. Hale slashing the tires of a man parked in her designated space and uses the footage to blackmail her into continuing his therapy sessions. Dr. Hale ultimately succeeds in murdering EJ and concealing his body within her own home.

In the end, it is Patricia who murders Dr. Hale. Her return to the house with her husband Ethan is revealed to be an attempt to destroy the recorded therapy sessions in which Dr. Hale exposes Patricia’s true crimes. Yet the twists do not end there. The novel also reveals that Ethan was responsible for the death of his mother, Gale, whom he pushed down the stairs. Gale, one of Dr. Hale’s patients, had long feared that her son intended to kill her; what appears to be paranoia is quietly confirmed after her death.

Similar to the toxic romantic dynamic explored in The Boyfriend through Tom and Daisy, Never Lie presents a fitting tale of two killers — Ethan and Patricia — finding their perfect match in one another through marriage.

Never Lie contains subtle humour throughout its storyline. Both the psychiatrist and her patients emerge as untrustworthy narrators of their own victim-centred accounts. Perhaps the only genuinely kind and generous character in the novel is Luke Strauss, Dr. Hale’s boyfriend. Through his affection for her, he is drawn into a web of deception, manipulation, and ultimately destruction at the hands of Ethan and Patricia.
