Imagine you are having dinner with a friend. You sit down at the table, and they ask you how work was today. And you are so excited to tell them that you got a promotion. You smile, unable to keep it in for another second, and it bursts out! You look at your friend as your eyes glow, waiting for their response. Your friend looks at you in silence, gives you a thumbs up, and says that, actually, the Entrecรดte de boeuf is really good on the menu.

Ouch.

You nod, pick up the menu, and the conversation changes. But you are silently crying on the inside. Your friend probably didnโ€™t even think much of it. They were hungry and distracted. But something important to you just slipped away, and your friend didnโ€™t notice.

In reality, you would think they are joking. But in the texting world we are all so obliged to live in today, this is called communication, or more precisely, non-communication.

Many of my friends and family already know I look like this: ๐Ÿ˜ก when they respond with this: ๐Ÿ‘.

There is some loneliness that both may not notice. And perhaps your friend didnโ€™t even mean to close the door.

If you were born between the mid-1990s and 2010, like me, chances are weโ€™re in the same boat. We could perceive it as โ€˜I donโ€™t careโ€™ or โ€˜Whateverโ€™. An emotional gut-punch. It leaves us finding the response passive-aggressive or rude. If you were born before that, like my parents, there is a good chance you consider this yellow emoji a simple โ€˜OKโ€™ or โ€˜I agreeโ€™.

But this goes beyond generations and shows a proven shift in digital communication, where some simple symbols can carry more weight than a simple โ€˜OKโ€™.

So why does using this emoji feel like someone is slamming the door in your face?

The โ€œDoing the Least, Efficientlyโ€ problem. When you are pouring your heart out to someone, getting the tiniest, quickest answer shows no effort or care. Today, we may not always be able to keep up, write long messages, or take the time to respond. Although itโ€™s understandable that people are tired and donโ€™t have the energy, this shortcut makes it look like a resignation from caring. And research shows it can quietly hurt the relationship, even if that was never the intention.

The โ€œHow to kill a conversation 101โ€. Itโ€™s a crime. Itโ€™s a single move that shoots a conversation dead. When two people are trying to connect, the dialogue cuts off mid-way.

The Sarcasm Pit. โ€œI got a promotion!โ€ you text. And you get ๐Ÿ‘. Then, youโ€™re thinking, โ€œWas that sarcastic or positive?โ€ You can only guess. The emoji that was originally designed to make digital communication more expressive now does the opposite. Without the warmth of a personโ€™s voice to protect it from falling into this pit, the mind immediately mistakes it for sarcasm.

The 404 No Sympathy Found Error. โ€œIโ€™m having those Sunday blues again.โ€ Back comes that little thumbs up. You stare at your phone. You were ready to talk, to feel a little less alone. But you put your phone away and hold it inside. When you share something with your friend and, in return, get a flat icon with no words, you get a closed door. It leaves a small crack in the relationship, and you are exposed. Trying to .zip an emotion using this convenient icon will likely result in a 404 error.

To all my friends and family, I wonโ€™t hate you forever for sending it, but I silently suffer a little when you do.

I hope this was informative ๐Ÿ‘, understandable ๐Ÿ‘, and helpful ๐Ÿ‘. Maybe you might use it a little less ๐Ÿ‘, or maybe more consciously ๐Ÿ‘, and not just another way to leave your friend in the open with ๐Ÿ‘.
