✨ Shrini’s Musings — Stewardship ✨

Stewardship is not ownership. It is responsibility. To own is to possess. To steward is to protect, nurture, and eventually pass forward. We need to understand as if that we are temporary custodians of power, of wealth, of relationships, of knowledge and of influence. Stewardship asks a different question than ambition. It is Not: What can I gain? But: What must I preserve?

Philosophy has long elevated stewardship over dominance. The Stoics viewed leadership as service aligned with virtue. Authority was not a privilege to exploit but a trust to honor. Power without restraint was considered weakness disguised as strength.

In Indian philosophy, dharma anchors stewardship. One’s role as parent, leader, ruler, teacher, carries obligations beyond self-interest. Duty is not oppression; it is alignment with a larger order.

Mythology offers profound illustrations. In the Mahabharata, stewardship is tested repeatedly. Bhishma, though flawed in allegiance, embodies the burden of stewardship where he protects the throne not for personal gain but for stability. His vow is not about power, but preservation. Similarly Yudhishthira, despite his mistakes, understands kingship as responsibility rather than entitlement. When he ascends the throne, it is not triumph but duty that defines him. His rule is guided by justice, not impulse and the greatest of the lot Krishna represents the highest form of stewardship by guiding events without seeking the throne. Influence without possession. Direction without domination. Contrast this with Duryodhana, who treats power as property. His refusal to share even “a needlepoint of land” is not strength, it is purely attachment. The result is destruction.

Stewardship requires restraint. In daily life, stewardship means caring for your body as a long-term asset, protecting trust in relationships, using influence responsibly and leaving spaces better than you found them.

In the workplace, stewardship separates leaders from opportunists whilst making decisions that protect the organization, not just for personal credit, mentoring successors instead of hoarding authority, thinking in decades, not quarters and acting as a guardian of culture.

True stewardship understands impermanence. You will not hold your position forever. You will not control every outcome. You are a bridge, not the destination.
