Stop learning by not doing: get your key players off the substitutes bench and into the game
Why a full test simulation delivers excellence in leadership, teamwork and soft skills
Imagine three things:
- A football team only practicing in a classroom.
- A sport education system built around blackboard training.
- A 360° feedback system designed to keep everyone happy.
If you swap the shirts for business suits, then you get the picture.
A recipe for disaster.
Yes, this is a gross exaggeration, but the message is apparent: our education system is built around the acquisition of knowledge; it is built to create experts. The very skills and competencies we need to survive in the 21st century, leadership, teamwork and soft skills are not on the curriculum. This skill gap represents a clear and present danger in the face of the global crisis and circumstances we face in all areas of industry, business and politics. We are faced with a major dilemma: grow leaders, empower teams and develop power skills or continue to support the technocratic barons of education, business and politics.
In other words, how to turn a team of experts into an expert team? Transform a problem into competitive-advantage.
There are five elements to consider:
Firstly
You need to get a handle on the skills gap; you need to measure the ability of your teams to collaborate.
How? Place a team in a full test leadership and teamwork 3D simulation; observe and score their progress from a qualified teamwork coach and from peer to peer feedback.

The design of the simulation should be that it becomes both the teacher and coach; the system should allow learners to choose from a variety of options, discovering and exploring, through trial and error. The challenges shape player behavior.
Why? The challenges are designed to be solved only when you operate as a team and effectively deploy soft skills; if you don’t work as a team, you fail; if you do work as a team, you also fail. But you use that failure to chart your progression and discover new solutions, and try out alternative proposals. You progress through forward failure or positive error and turn standard pedagogy on its head.

Secondly
Get the teams and coaches on the same page via the team skill’s scorecard.

The team should own the scorecard, it is their learning property; in their hands, they can drive the learning process forward quickly and make startling progress. This aspect of team training should not be underestimated: when the team figures out how to collaborate, communicate, plan and set goals, then high levels of engagement and motivation kick in; people get the hang of it and feel comfortable moving out of their comfort zone.

Thirdly
Rinse and repeat; or more correctly rinse, fail and repeat. Dynamic content and non-linear like game flow should ensure players are captivated and interested. Full test leadership and teamwork simulations are 3D video games with in-depth scenarios; they should mirror in quality and playability top video games; collaborative and cooperative challenges and problems should be reflected in the game principles.

Importantly, movement and controls should be designed for beginners. Soft skills and not technical mastery should be the main rule governing design. You can further enhance the learning experience with a mix of AI, AR and VR capabilities.
Fourthly
Scale the program company-wide. Cloud based, or multiplatform simulation technology can deploy easily across organizations.

A training schedule is a must: training regularly increases performance. It is a black and white strategy: train regularly, increase ownership via empowered teams; you then stand a chance of winning. Not training regularly increases your chances of failing. You design your own future.
Fifthly
Recruit champions (European term) evangelicals (USA) to set your organization on fire.

Launch corporate esport leadership and teamwork competitions, invite other companies, partners, suppliers to play against your teams. Your engine of growth and survivability is leadership and empowered teams; get them on the pitch.
Expert knowledge is important. However, a technocratic mindset is incapable of dealing with the global crisis, dilemmas and problems, big and small, that we face in all areas of society. In the face of an unpredictable future, you need to get your people really in the game, off the substitutes bench, and training regularly in leadership, empowered teamwork and soft skills.
