That was Dec 13th, 2021. I still remember how off everything felt. I wasn’t in the place I dreamt of, nor did I feel like I deserved where I ended up, especially after everything I did to reach “somewhere.” My first class went online thanks to COVID and not gonna lie, that one virus really flipped my whole track. So many things went downhill adding health, hopes, everything just felt stuck. Some random online sessions, a few names I didn’t think I’d remember, and somehow, over time, some of the people I judged early on became the ones I grew the closest to day by day, year by year.
I was a different girl back then . Entered and then those awkward smiles, eyes that barely met anyone else’s. And yeah, those benches in class? They’ve heard everything from our lame, dark jokes to those random deep talks. Not even one class I sat through fully attentive — 7 semesters and still proudly clueless sometimes. The timing of walking into class kept getting funnier — from being “on time,” to “just five minutes late,” to 15 mins and entering with that ‘Please ignore me’ face. From all these to the hilarious day of getting caught on proxy and professor telling me to stop acting innocent (❁´◡`❁)
Labs were never about learning and more about laughing, gossiping, and pretending we were doing something meaningful. I’ll never forget that DCOM(Digital communication …etc…)lab practical — literally doing nothing, just playing with wires and still managing to pass.
My roommate proper Gujju, me being Telugu both of us wondering how we’d survive under one roof. Funny thing is, we did more than survive. Now there’s no harsh , cuss word left to use on each other and still we don’t care and be the same close smiling at each other .
Room 294,354 and our non-working fan “GUSA”, named after us, of course never gave air, but never failed to give us reasons to scream and laugh every summer night. And those summer workshops, under the sun, before fire, hammering metal like we were forging swords ..and the funniest part was there were people fighting for turns to hit the metal in that heat?
Then came our professors with their iconic punchlines — like the time one confidently said “Mango DB,” and the whole class googled it wondering if we’d missed out on a new tech. But yeah, this college did have a special talent for wasting our time. Forms,Department stamps, HOD signs , late evaluations, running between blocks like it’s some treasure hunt. But now, thinking back these are exactly the moments we’ll sit and laugh at someday, probably while working in some random office or sipping chai somewhere.
Our evenings those swings, our walks to HAP for ice cream, talking for hours near Lakeview Garden, planning trips that never happened. And yeah, those fights, that drama, all the low days but the people around remained the same. Ears to listen, arms to pull you up, always.
Then came the shift when we became seniors. There were so-called “serious issues” and disputes between juniors and seniors. But in the end, when I met those same people again, we were laughing at how those past times were.
Suvali beach, that temple near our campus, the Swaminarayan temple, those high moments , no audience singing sessions ,those small VR mall shopping tricks we pulled to save money (or not pay at all) still crack me up. And those mela rides, we screamed our lungs out like 10-year-olds.Those Sparsh dance moments , class polls for unity in bunking the class , main part was the train journeys we did to go on vacations , the list goes on… everything and the best part is in all these we never lost our smile how bad the situation was .. and made it enough funnier to be !
There was even one girl ,we barely spoke for four years and on our last day at campus, we laughed together till midnight. You never know how or when you will hangout or laugh with. And even now, I don’t know everyone by name, but somehow, all of us are linked through this one common friend — — our campus.
And friendships? The ones I once thought were strange turned out to be the most genuine — they became my strongest connections. Days felt like scenes from a film, playing out in a mix of Hindi, Telugu, and English.. where just hearing my Hindi was enough to make anyone feel a little weirder.
Those late nights, the non-stop chats, asking random questions at 2 AM and still getting answers like “kya ,Ha cheppu or ohh yes see…?” — these are the people Surat gave me. People to count on..
The last 3 days were a blur running around for no dues, collecting slips, laughing and being exhausted at once. I took a cycle and just went around campus. I was smiling like mad remembering all the nonsense and chaos we lived through. That same place which once made me feel stuck… now made me feel full. And yeah, the HOD, the lab profs, the mess food none of that matters anymore. It was all part of it.
I kept saying it in the beginning and even in the end — “I don’t want to go.” Still don’t. Maybe someday, I’ll be back. New me, same place.
And to all those lunches and dinners with my Noah in our usual corner, talking about life and nonsense from A-Z till mess didi literally kicked us out. Every dance, every fest, every time we ran in the rain, bunked together, begged TAs for marks, asking for proxy, wore our best clothes for events — we did it all. From top level drama to pure comedy.
People changed ,some went from something to nothing. Some just choose the other way , some were lost along the way. I’ve seen people give up, and I’ve seen some of them fight back again, despite everything. This place showed me so many seasons of people summer highs, falls, winters, and the unexpected comebacks. It was never constant, but that’s what made it real. Everyone brought something ,every one of them added a page to this journey.
So yeah, to all my friends — I know you all are grateful for me being in your lives ^_~,maybe everyone who knows me would be in wonder , as for the first time Iam writing or feeling something good about my campus.
And Surat specially SVNIT , thank you for giving me this mad, loud, annoying, loving group.
From that unsure girl in 2021 to someone smiling quietly at everything that happened till May 2025 ,this was one ride I’ll never stop talking about.
Thanks. Just thanks. For everything
