When a favorite Japanese chocolate becomes harder to find than toilet paper in 2020

I popped into a new Daiso location recently after a quick Target run. Usually, I pick up my staples — Meiji almonds, royal milk tea, and Japanese rice crackers. This time, though, the shelves were bare of Meiji almonds.
The cashier told me they’re the most popular chocolate in the store, and shipments sell out almost immediately. It reminded me of the pandemic days when people would clear shelves of toilet paper in a frenzy.
My family and I first discovered Meiji almonds when we lived in Japan in the mid-2000s, and they’ve been a favorite ever since. There’s something about that perfect balance of chocolate and roasted almond that keeps me (and apparently a lot of others) coming back for more.
