The Most Dangerous Assumption You Can Make in Indonesia

🇮🇩 PART 3 — INDONESIA: The Numbers Game

Business in Indonesia — what you need to know..

Business in Indonesia — what you need to know..

So many people stumble with Indonesia. It’s one of those countries that for many, its hard to capture. On paper Indonesia looks like a numbers game with over 270 million people. The fourth most populous country in the world. It is Southeast Asia’s largest economy, a digital market racing toward a trillion-dollar future.

Indonesia is young, mobile-first, fast-growing, friendly, happy. The moment you arrive into Jakarta, it feels like scale waiting to be captured. So the assumption is simple. “If the market is this big, the people are so friendly, and the brand is strong… it should work.”

But even if you’re selling something as globally recognised as Coca-Cola, people know it, they recognise it, they trust it. So the thinking is that it should sell, right?

Wrong, because Indonesia isn’t a brand market.

Stick to the Freeway’s — Jakarta traffic is no joke..

Indonesia is a relationship market and this is where most fail. You can have the product, you can have the pricing, you can have the presentation. But if you don’t have the relationship, you don’t have the business.

What you’ll get instead looks promising. Warm introductions, friendly meetings, open conversations. Everything feels positive, and then… nothing. No traction, no conversion, no movement.

Not because the opportunity isn’t real, but because access hasn’t been earned. In Indonesia, business doesn’t start in the meeting. It starts before it, over coffee, over lunch, over dinner. In conversations that aren’t about the deal — but about the people behind it. This is a softer market than most, not weaker, not slower. It’s just different.

Pressure doesn’t accelerate outcomes here, it breaks them. Trust isn’t assumed, it’s built and built properly.

Jakarta is not the quiet city as you might expect..

Jakarta is not the quiet city as you might expect..

I’ve been coming to Indonesia for over 20 years. Some see this as inefficient, too many steps, too much time. but I don’t. I see it as one of the most honest business environments in the world. Imagine needing to know someone before you do business with them. Imagine trust being a prerequisite — not a bonus. Somewhere along the way, the West moved away from that.

Indonesia didn’t.

So can you win here? Yes, but not because people know your brand. Because people know you.
