NASA — National Aeronautics and Space Administration Founded in 1958 in direct response to Sputnik, NASA has produced some of the most significant images in human history. The Hubble Space Telescope alone has generated over a million observations since 1990. The Apollo program gave us Earthrise — the photograph taken from lunar orbit in 1968 that many credit with launching the modern environmental movement by showing, for the first time, how fragile and singular our planet looks from space.
NASA’s more recent achievements are no less remarkable. The James Webb Space Telescope, launched on Christmas Day 2021 and operational at a point 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, can see light from galaxies that formed less than 300 million years after the Big Bang. It is, in the most literal sense, a machine for looking back in time.
ESA — European Space Agency The ESA’s Rosetta mission accomplished something that had been theoretically possible and practically unimaginable: it landed a probe on a comet moving at 135,000 kilometers per hour. The footage of comet 67P, its surface a strange landscape of boulders and dust in the deep black of space, remains among the most alien imagery ever captured.
JAXA — Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA’s Hayabusa missions collected physical samples from asteroids and returned them to Earth — a feat of engineering precision that requires the spacecraft to find, approach, and retrieve material from a rock tumbling through space, then navigate home across hundreds of millions of kilometers. The footage of asteroid Ryugu, close enough to see its surface texture, feels like science fiction that accidentally became real.
ESO — European Southern Observatory Based in the Atacama Desert in Chile, the ESO operates some of the most powerful ground-based telescopes on Earth. The Missions That Changed How We See Everything
Voyager 1 and 2 — Launched 1977 The Voyager probes are the furthest human-made objects from Earth. Voyager 1 crossed into interstellar space in 2012 — the first human-made object to leave the heliosphere and enter the space between stars. It is currently more than 23 billion kilometers from the Sun, and it is still transmitting data.
In 1990, at Carl Sagan’s request, NASA commanded Voyager 1 to turn its camera back toward Earth. The resulting photograph showed our planet as a pale blue dot — a fraction of a pixel suspended in a sunbeam. Sagan’s reflection on that image remains one of the most quoted passages in the history of science.
Hubble Space Telescope — Launched 1990 Hubble launched with a flawed mirror and nearly became one of NASA’s most expensive failures. A 1993 repair mission — conducted by astronauts working in open space — corrected the flaw, and Hubble went on to produce imagery that fundamentally changed humanity’s understanding of the universe’s age, structure, and scale.
The Hubble Ultra Deep Field image, taken over eleven days in 2003–2004 by pointing the telescope at a patch of apparently empty sky, revealed approximately 10,000 galaxies — some of them dating to less than 800 million years after the Big Bang.
Cassini-Huygens — Saturn Mission (1997–2017) Cassini spent thirteen years orbiting Saturn, sending back footage of the planet’s rings, its moons, and its storms in detail that still seems impossible. When it photographed Earth through Saturn’s rings — a tiny point of light, barely visible between the bands of ice and rock — the image was called “The Day the Earth Smiled.”
The Huygens probe descended through the atmosphere of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, transmitting footage of an alien landscape with rivers, lakes, and weather — all made of liquid methane rather than water.
Mars Rovers — Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, Perseverance The Mars rovers have collectively spent decades on the Martian surface, sending back footage of a world that is both alien and eerily familiar. Red plains, eroded riverbeds, dust storms, sunsets that are blue instead of orange.
