10 Facts About Cher

Her life, like her clothes, has a lot of transparency.

Cher is a bit older than I am. There aren’t a lot of entertainers that fall into that category. On top of that, she’s been famous for as long as I can remember. So, when it comes to things in her life to write about, there is a ton of material to choose from.

Her pre-Sonny life was colorful, as was her time with Sonny. And her post-Sonny life has been adventuresome to say the least. She has made an impact in the music industry, as well as in TV and movies.

And then there is her personal life and wardrobe.

There are lots of interesting facts about Cher. here are a few of them.

1: Cher has had a number one hit on a Billboard chart in seven consecutive decades. The only solo artist to have accomplished that.

That streak runs from the 1960s -2020s. And don’t rule out the possibility of Cher extending that steak to eight consecutive decades.

2: Cher has changed names a number of times throughout her life. Some of those name changes were the result of being adopted, or marriages, while others had different motivations.

As a hunt and peck typist, I’m glad she settled on Cher.

3: When she was growing up, her family was very poor. She recalled having to use rubber bands to hold her shoes together.

And I thought putting newspaper in the bottom of my shoes because of holes was bad.

4: Early in her relationship with Sonny, she was his housekeeper.

This kind of reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld.

5: Not surprisingly, Cher was not a typical student while in school.

She would entertain her classmates during lunchtime by singing. She also wore outfits that revealed a bare mid-rift. No doubt that also entertained some of her classmates.

6: Phil Spector produced Cher’s first record, “Ringo, I Love You.”

Cher released the record under the name, Bonnie Jo Mason. That doesn’t have the same ring as Cher, does it?

7: Early in their career, Sonny wanted Cher to perform solo, but Cher wanted Sonny to perform with her because of her stage freight.

She said she sang to people through Sonny. He was like a combination microphone/blindfold.

8: Before they performed as Sonny and Cher, they were known as Caesar and Cleo.

Well, probably more accurate is they were unknown as Caesar and Cleo.

9: Sonny and Cher boosted their careers with a trip to England during the mid 60s.

While the 60s in America saw a British invasion, England saw a Sonny and Cher invasion. S&C left in their wake British teenagers wearing bell-bottoms, striped pants, ruffled shirts, industrial zippers and fur vests. Sort of payback for American teenage boys having Beatles haircuts.

10: At a low point in their career, Sonny and Cher put together a night club act. And on occasion, Sonny would be heckled. Which would lead to Cher heckling the heckler. Which resulted in Sonny chastising Cher. Which led to Cher heckling Sonny.

The heckling and interaction became a popular part of the act and TV execs took notice. Sonny and Cher started making the rounds of TV shows, which led to their TV series. In addition to the heckling, Cher also started wearing her signature low-cut gowns. Cher was like an ethnic Don Rickles in an expensive gown. Wait a minute. Scratch that. I don’t like that mental picture.

At this point, I’m going to stop. I’ll do a part two on Cher in the next day or two. I thought about breaking this piece into different phases of Cher’s life. For example, I considered doing a piece on Cher’s life before her time with Sonny. I would call that piece BS. Before Sonny. Hold on, being told a lot of my stuff is BS.

Actually, a lot of my stuff does take place before Sonny Bono.
