He-Man: Masters of the Universe Movie Review

Some movies entertain you. Some movies impress you. And then there are movies that transport you straight back to your childhood, where after-school evenings meant cartoons, snacks, and pretending a random stick was the Sword of Power.

The live-action adaptation of He-Man: Masters of the Universe cartoon belongs firmly in that last category.

If you grew up in the 80s or the 90s, chances are you already know the gang. A charmingly naive Prince Adam. A giant talking tiger. A villain whose entire face is literally a skull. And of course, the iconic phrase that every millennial can recite on command: “I HAVE THE POWER!”

The recent live-action film Masters of the Universe (2026) is a shout-out to those memories.

From the very first frame, the film pulls you into Eternia with breathtaking visual effects. The visual effects are nothing short of mesmerizing, bringing the colorful fantasy landscape to life in a way that feels both modern and faithful to the original — and it’s clear that the filmmakers understood the assignment.

For longtime fans, this movie feels like opening a childhood toy box that has somehow been upgraded with 2026 graphics.

Revisiting the fan-favorite characters like Ram-Man, Fisto, Battle Cat (Soora Puli in Tamil), and The Sorceress with the polish of today’s special effects feels almost like a fever dream that somehow escaped the imagination of every 90s kid and landed on the big screen.

And yes, before anyone asks — the Sorceress still has that unmistakable mystical aura. (Deadpool fans may find themselves making a few unexpected connections too).

Speaking of fan favorites, Idris Elba once again proves why audiences love him.

Our very own Heimdall (where are my Marvel stans at ?) returns with yet another charismatic, witty, fan-favorite performance. Every scene he’s in carries a natural gravitas, balanced perfectly with humor and warmth.

Camila Mendes as Teela absolutely steals every scene she’s in. She brings confidence, heart, and just the right amount of attitude to the role. (Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the red highlights? Whoever made that styling decision deserves a raise.)

And finally, we arrive at the man of the universe himself.

The fine piece of art that is Nicholas Galitzine.

Galitzine captures Prince Adam’s defining quality perfectly: his innocence. His portrayal never forgets that beneath all the muscles, armor, and destiny lies a young man trying to figure out who he is. He navigates the story with a sincerity that makes Adam instantly likable, while gradually growing into the legendary He-Man fans know and love.

Now, let’s be honest.

The core message of the story is as old as fantasy itself: believe in yourself rather than the power of the weapon you carry.

It’s not exactly groundbreaking.

But the film makes it work through well-written dialogue, impressive attention to the original lore, and a genuine affection for the source material. The production team absolutely nailed the He-Man suit, balancing classic design elements with a modern cinematic look.

Sizzled with humor, the movie knows when to lighten the mood. The jokes land naturally and keep the adventure moving without undermining the emotional moments.

And since I watched it in Tamil, I have to give a special shout-out to the Tamil script adaptation team. Translating fantasy dialogue while preserving the charm, humor, and emotional beats is no easy task. Somehow, they managed to retain all the rizz without sacrificing authenticity.

But beyond the visuals and special effects, there was one moment that hit me right in the nostalgia gland.

The cameo by Dolph Lundgren — the He-Man of the 1987 live-action film- when he passes the metaphorical torch to Galetzine (in the gym scene, if you recall). Whether you grew up watching the cartoons or remember Lundgren’s version, there’s something poetic about seeing a franchise continue to evolve while still honoring the heroes who carried it before.

Chapeau to the director Travis Knight and the entire creative team — you can feel their affection for this universe in almost every frame.

Rather than trying to reinvent He-Man into something unrecognizable, they embraced what made the franchise special in the first place and updated it for modern audiences.

Perhaps the most touching part of the experience wasn’t even on the screen.

Watching grown adults who once rushed home to catch episodes of He-Man now bringing their own children to experience the story felt strangely moving. There was something beautiful about seeing one generation introduce another to the heroes they grew up admiring.

For a franchise built on imagination, heroism, and larger-than-life adventures, that felt incredibly fitting.

So overall, with its spectacular blend of visual effects, charismatic performances from the star cast, and authentic world-building, The Masters of the Universe movie is a nostalgia overdose that makes every millennial feel ten years old again.

The Movie is a must recommend for all those in need of a day off, and some good laugh.
