In my culture, we have lots of sayings that help. Depending on how they’re used, sometimes they don’t.
This one says, ‘stick to the evil that you know.’ This can be interpreted in several ways. It’s used by Jamaicans facing certain crises and aids in us making the right decision based on what we know, are familiar with, and are comfortable doing.
I love to walk. The map of Kingston and St. Andrew is in my head in my own country. GPS would envy my brain.
Depending on your location, New York is a different side of hell.
I was in an unfamiliar location, and I didn’t drive. So, GPS became my best friend. I followed GPS for a while. It told me to turn on a certain street. My instincts warned to keep going as the memory ‘stick to the evil that you know’ replayed in my head.
I kept going until I saw a familiar bank.
Then, I knew where I was. Getting home from there was easy and shorter.
If I had followed GPS, I would have been home fifteen minutes later.
That route was longer.
GPS often doesn’t give us the shortest route, making me wonder if they are partnered with the gas or oil companies. A longer route means more gas, time, and wear and tear on your car. Lol.
