The old antique dealer lay slumped beside his mahogany desk, shards of an antique porcelain tea cup scattered across the rug.

“Heart attack,” the sergeant grunted. “Dropped his cup when he fell.”

Detective Vance examined the dead man’s relaxed posture. “No. Someone had tea with him, waited for him to die, and walked out.”

Keiko Mori knelt quietly beside the shards. Ignoring the painted glaze, she turned a shard beneath the lamp and ran her gloved thumb along the unglazed fracture. Dark tea had soaked deep into the porous clay. Fresh tea still beaded across the glazed surface.

“Porcelain remembers differently,” she said softly.

Vance looked down. “Meaning?”

“It was broken before the tea arrived.”

Vance smiled faintly. The jagged alibi finally crumbled into a staged timeline.
