Soraya Manutchehri. The true story that shocked the world.

In 1986 in the small village of Kuhpayeh, Iran a 35 year old woman named Soraya Manutchehri became the victim of a devastating injustice.

Soraya was falsely accused of adultery a crime punishable by stoning in some areas at the time. According to those who later told her story, the accusation had little to do with the truth and much to do with personal ambition and manipulation.

A conspiracy built on lies

Soraya’s husband is said to have wanted to marry a 14-year-old girl. However this would have meant having to support two families or return the dowry Soraya’s family had given him. Determined to avoid both responsibilities, he began spreading accusations that Soraya had cheated on him.

With the support of some local officials, the charges quickly became a formal case. Soraya was brought before a local court, where the chances of a defense or fair trial were minimal. Witnesses were pressed and the verdict seemed already decided.

A brutal public execution

Soraya was eventually found guilty and sentenced to death by public stoning, one of the cruelest forms of execution.

According to witness accounts, the punishment was carried out publicly: Soraya was partially buried to prevent her from escaping and stones were thrown until she died. Those who witnessed the execution were deeply traumatized.

The story that reached the world

Years later, the case would have remained unknown had it not been documented by French-Iranian journalist Freidoune Sahebjam. After hearing the story from a relative who witnessed the events, he investigated and wrote the book The Stoning of Soraya M. bringing the tragedy to the attention of the international community.

The book later inspired the film The Stoning of Soraya M., spreading Soraya’s story globally and sparking debates about human rights, justice, and the abuse of power.

A symbol of injustice

Soraya’s death wasn’t just the loss of a life. For many, it became a powerful example of what can happen when corruption, fear and manipulation prevail over truth and justice.

Her story continues to be remembered as a warning a reminder of the importance of protecting human rights and ensuring fair justice systems.

Stories like Soraya’s are painful to revisit, but they remain crucial. It challenges the world to ask difficult questions:

Has the world really changed enough since then or do injustices like this still exist, hidden from view?
