Somewhere in the world, a criminal is logging into someone’s bank account. The bank’s security system checks where the login is coming from. It sees a home internet connection in a quiet suburb — a real house a real family’s IP address, nothing suspicious. So, it waves the login through.

That house might be yours.

You’d never know. Nothing on your TV flickers. Your Wi-Fi feels exactly the same. But your internet connection just got borrowed to make a digital crime look entirely ordinary. This is what’s known as a residential proxy, and in March 2026, the FBI put out an urgent public warning about it — because the gadgets being hijacked are the cheap, forgotten ones sitting in tens of millions of homes.

What a “Residential Proxy” Actually Is

A proxy is simply a middleman. Instead of connecting straight to a website, your web traffic bounces through another computer first, so the target website thinks the request originated from that middleman’s location.

Criminals love this for one specific reason: trust.

In its official public service announcement, the FBI specifically named:

  • Digital picture frames

The biggest target of all is the old home router — especially one that the manufacturer stopped supporting years ago. No more security updates means a wide-open backdoor, and the device just sits there, plugged in and online 24/7. It’s perfect real estate for an attacker.

A security firm called GreyNoise spent 90 days monitoring attack traffic hitting internet-connected devices between late 2025 and early 2026. They logged a staggering 4 billion malicious sessions.

The Kicker: Nearly 40% of those attacking addresses traced directly back to ordinary home internet connections, not data servers. Furthermore, 78% of those home addresses were entirely invisible to traditional “block-list” security defenses. They rotate so fast — each one used for barely a couple of connections before vanishing — that automated watchdogs can never keep up.

One detail from the research is particularly striking: analysts could tell these were genuinely hijacked home devices because the malicious traffic perfectly mirrored human sleep cycles. The volume drastically quieted down at night.

These are real houses, with real bedtimes, and criminal traffic riding along silently in the background.

And business is booming. When Google Threat Intelligence helped disrupt a massive proxy service called IPIDEA, they found that in a single seven-day stretch, more than 550 different criminal and state-backed hacking groups — operating out of China, North Korea, Iran, and Russia — were using just that one service to hide their operations.

Why You Should Care (Even If You “Have Nothing to Steal”)

There are two major reasons you cannot afford to ignore this:

  1. Your connection is the disguise for someone else’s crime. If financial fraud, a phishing campaign, or state-sponsored cyberespionage gets traced back by law enforcement, the digital breadcrumbs lead straight to your front door first. That is a legal and security headache you do not want to navigate.
  2. The backdoor is already open. A device that has been covertly modified to act as a proxy has already been compromised. The exact same systemic access criminals use to borrow your internet bandwidth can be used to pivot onto your internal network, snoop on your local traffic, harvest your personal logins, or deploy ransomware. The proxy is just the part you can’t see.
