Learning Through Games and Communication Tools

As a young teacher, I’ll admit that technology has been around my whole life. I grew up with smartphones, laptops, and access to social media. It has always been something that is just a part of everyday life, with no worries or questions about it. That is, until I started this career in education. Students today are growing up with even more advanced technologies than I did, and because of that, I do believe that technology should be included in my classroom. It can be used as a valuable tool for helping students learn and explore on a deeper level. However, my biggest goal for using technology in my classroom is that it supports my students’ learning rather than becoming a replacement for meaningful class discussions or hands-on experiences.

One of the most exciting areas that I’ve explored is digital game-based learning. An example of a digital game-based learning platform that I love and want to integrate into my teaching is Kahoot!. From personal experience, Kahoot! is a way to ensure participation while also making learning interactive and fun. I believe that by using digital game-based learning activities, my students will stay engaged and will also be excited about learning. Something I have learned is that games can actually be powerful tools for teaching concepts, motivating students, and helping them practice critical thinking independently or in teams.

Another huge component of technology in the classroom is communication. One platform that has really caught my attention is ClassDojo, which I first learned about from a few of my mentor teachers and educators I follow on social media. I am still exploring all of its features, but it allows me to communicate with families in one convenient place. ClassDojo also includes classroom management tools where I can reward students for positive behavior or address issues when needed. I can give students feedback in real time and even send photos of them learning throughout the day, which keeps families involved and connected. I’m excited to try ClassDojo in my classroom because it combines communication, feedback, and accountability all on one platform which makes technology feel purposeful and practical.

Using technology in my classroom is more than just about having fun. It’s about using resources to help my students learn, stay motivated, and feel connected. Online games make learning interactive while tools like ClassDojo help me communicate with my students and their families. I am super excited to keep exploring ways to use technology to support my students and make my classroom a place where everyone can succeed.
