When Love Becomes Legacy: Educating Girls to Build the Future

The Late D.R. Shah and Sharadkumar Shah Memorial Scholarship Program supports nine young scholars across India in partnership with Yuva Unstoppable.

A Founder’s Note from Anu Shah, Founder & Host of The Talk Lane

In memory of my father, Sharadkumar Shah, and my uncle, Late D.R. Shah, I have started a scholarship program to support nine exceptional girls from underprivileged backgrounds as they continue their education from high school through college — and step into the future of STEM.

Some legacies are not built with wealth.

They are built with love, protection, sacrifice, and the quiet courage of people who show up for you when you need them the most.

The Late D.R. Shah and Sharadkumar Shah Memorial Scholarship Program is my attempt to carry forward two such legacies.

This is a personal initiative I have started as Anu Shah, in memory of my father, Sharadkumar Shah, and my uncle, Late D.R. Shah. I am sharing it here through The Talk Lane because this platform has always been about more than conversations. It is about spotlighting people, ideas, and institutions that are building a better future.

And few things build the future more powerfully than educating a girl.

Late D.R. Shah was Dinesh Fua to me — my uncle, but in every meaningful way, also a parent. He loved me, protected me, and raised me as his own child alongside his three children. He gave me something every child deserves: the feeling that I was safe, seen, and worthy.

That kind of love does not leave you.

It becomes a responsibility.

Sharadkumar Shah, my father, gave me my name, my roots, and the values that shaped who I became. His memory reminds me that education is not just a personal achievement. It is a family’s sacrifice, a community’s hope, and sometimes the only bridge between who a child is told she can be and who she actually becomes.

This scholarship program was born from that belief.

I have started this initiative to support bright, deserving girls from underprivileged backgrounds — girls who have already proved their talent, discipline, and hunger to rise, but who need support to continue their education from high school through college.

These are not stories of charity.

These are stories of excellence.

The scholars supported through this program are:

1. Pallavi D N from Karnataka, daughter of a driver, who secured 98% in Class 10.
2. Prabhjot Kaur from Punjab, daughter of a supervisor, who secured 98% in Class 10.
3. Harpreet Kaur from Punjab, daughter of a farmer, who secured 95% in Class 10.
4. Tannu from Haryana, daughter of a labourer, who secured 94% in Class 10.
5. Tanishka Avadhut Patil from Maharashtra, daughter of a farmer, who secured 91% in Class 10.
6. Ankita Chandrakant Suryavanshi from Maharashtra, daughter of a farmer, who secured 91% in Class 10.
7. Yakshita Vaghela from Gujarat, daughter of a mason, who secured 90% in Class 10.
8. Jubaida Khatun from Haryana, daughter of a driver, who secured 85% in Class 10.
9. Yasmeen Khan from Maharashtra, daughter of a driver, who secured 84% in Class 10.

Read those names again.

A driver’s daughter. A farmer’s daughter. A labourer’s daughter. A mason’s daughter.

And yet, look at the marks.

Look at the ambition.

Look at the proof.

What these girls have achieved is not ordinary. They have done it without privilege, without shortcuts, and often without the kind of support systems that many of us take for granted. Their results are not just percentages on a marksheet. They are evidence of resilience.

For too long, girls from modest backgrounds have been asked to shrink their dreams to fit their circumstances.

They are told to be practical.

To compromise.

To stop studying.

To choose safety over ambition.

To believe that STEM, leadership, innovation, and financial independence belong to someone else.

I do not believe that.

I believe the next engineer, scientist, doctor, researcher, founder, technologist, or policymaker may be sitting today in a small home in Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, or Gujarat — waiting for one thing: someone to believe in her before the world does.

That is what this scholarship is about.

It is financial support, yes. But more than that, it is a message:

Your dreams are valid. Your talent matters. Your future is worth investing in.

I found these young scholars through Yuva Unstoppable, a nonprofit doing extraordinary work in education and youth empowerment. I am deeply grateful to Amitabh Shah and Rashmi Shah for the work they are doing to identify, support, and uplift children who have the talent but not always the access.

Their work makes it possible for people like me to turn intention into action and emotion into impact.

For me, this is personal.

I was loved and protected by people who made me feel that I mattered. I know what it means when someone stands behind you. I know how powerful it is when someone says:

Go ahead.

Study.

Dream.

Build.

I am here.

Through this scholarship, I want to say that to these girls.

Go ahead.

Study.

Dream.

Build.

Lead.

Do not let your background become a boundary. Do not let society define the size of your ambition. Do not let anyone convince you that being born a girl means being born with fewer possibilities.

The Late D.R. Shah and Sharadkumar Shah Memorial Scholarship Program is my tribute to the men whose love and values shaped my life.

But it is also my commitment to the girls whose futures can shape the world.

Because when you educate a girl, you do not just change one life.

You change the confidence of a family.

You change the economic future of a household.

You change what younger girls in that community believe is possible.

And when that girl enters STEM, you do something even bigger:

You change who gets to build the future.

This is only the beginning.
