Maybe I’m Not Late, Just On My Own Timeline.
I’m 28.
Maybe I’m Not Late, Just On My Own Timeline.

I’m 28.
And while that might sound young or old, depending on who you ask, it’s the kind of age where you start to feel the weight of the world’s expectations , especially if you’re not ticking certain boxes fast enough.
I turned 28 in May. I work in advertising and genuinely love what I do. I live at home with my family. I’m not in a rush for the next big thing. And until recently, that felt okay, even beautiful, in its own way.
But lately, I’ve been asking myself this quiet, persistent question:
Am I falling behind?

Not because I feel lost or dissatisfied, but quite the opposite. I’m proud of my journey. I’ve grown in ways I never imagined, become someone younger me would admire. But the pressure around me makes me pause.
People around me — some older, many younger — are getting married, having kids, buying homes, building a kind of “adult” life that looks very put together. And while I’ve never truly wanted those things in the way I’m told I should, it’s still confusing. Because I’m not disappointed with my life… but everyone else seems to be.
The questions come faster now. When are you bringing someone home? When is your turn? Are you waiting for something? It’s like my age has unlocked some kind of family and societal panic button, and I’m the emergency.

What’s worse is that I don’t even have answers to give. I don’t feel desperate to get married. I’m not even sure I want to. And that’s not because I’m scared or bitter or wounded, I just don’t view marriage as some grand finale to womanhood. I can’t visualize it as a completion of who I am. That feels hard to explain to people who were raised to believe marriage is the destination.
(And yet… I’ve started wondering about having a child. Not within marriage — just… on my own. That thought scares me, not because it feels wrong, but because of how unconventional it is. It’s the kind of desire people whisper about or judge loudly. And what unsettles me most is that I’m not even sure I care if they judge me. Maybe that’s growth. Maybe it’s rebellion. Maybe it’s just me learning to trust myself a little more).
But still, the comparison trap is real. And even though I try not to indulge it often, when I do, it hurts. I feel sad. I wonder if I’m missing something important. If I’ve made a wrong turn. And then I remember: I’m actually… kind of happy.

My joy lives in small things. In progress no one sees. In the peace I feel at the end of a long day, curling up with a movie that makes me laugh or squirm — no in-betweens. In the confidence that I am building a life I like.
There’s pride in the fact that I haven’t forced myself to move faster than I can handle. There’s pride in waking up every day and trying again. In buying myself things I used to only dream of. In not needing anyone else’s definition of success to validate mine. If you catch my drift…
If I could talk to my younger self, I’d tell her this: You’ll get there — your own ‘there.’ You’ll buy the things you once begged the universe for. You’ll move forward slowly, beautifully. You’ll be someone you’re proud of — not because you kept up, but because you stayed true.
I don’t know what the future holds. I don’t know if I’ll ever get married, or have a baby on my own, or write that book I keep dreaming about. But I do know that living differently doesn’t mean failing. And just because my life doesn’t look like everyone else’s… doesn’t mean it’s broken.
It’s just mine. And right now, that’s enough.
