Designing for Thin Air: What Vision Pro Teaches About Spatial UX

Spatial UX is no longer experimental — it’s here, and it’s reshaping interface design as we know it. According to a 2024 XR Today report, 62% of developers building for Apple Vision Pro cite spatial UX as both their biggest challenge and their biggest opportunity. Unlike traditional UI which operates on flat 2D planes, Vision Pro introduces layered z-axis space, dynamic user context, and input methods that defy clicks and taps. It’s a dramatic shift — and the rules of interface design are being rewritten.

Designing for Vision Pro means breaking out of the grid. Traditional UI layouts — buttons, cards, lists — now float in volumetric space. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines for VisionOS push designers to think in terms of distance, depth, and field-of-view. Interfaces must now be readable at a glance from multiple angles, anchored to the user’s environment, and responsive to movement in 3D space. For spatial UX, good design isn’t just about visual clarity — it’s about presence and interaction fidelity.

The biggest UI shift in Vision Pro is input: no touchscreens, no controllers — just your eyes and your fingers in the air. 74% of Vision Pro apps redesigned their interfaces to support eye-tracking and gesture-based navigation, according to Apple Developer News. The Juno browser, for example, uses eye gaze for selection and gentle pinches to confirm actions — making even the idea of a “button” feel outdated. This forces designers to rethink affordances, feedback cues, and flow logic for intuitive, touchless interactions.

In mixed reality, the environment is no longer just a backdrop — it becomes part of your interface. Spatial UX means designing elements that respond to real-world lighting, geometry, and even sound. IKEA’s MR app uses Vision Pro’s spatial mesh to render furniture in true scale and form, adjusting shadows and textures in real time based on the user’s actual space. This creates realism that’s not only immersive, but also functional — transforming “see it in your room” from gimmick to utility.

What we’re seeing with Vision Pro is a transition from flat to fluid design. Spatial UX requires designers to think beyond frames, canvases, and breakpoints. Interfaces must now behave like physical entities — anchoring, scaling, responding to presence, and disappearing when not needed.
