Are You a Hesitator When You Create?

In my last post, I asked: Are you an artistic Overdoer or a Hesitator? We explored the Overdoer, and today, let’s shine a gentle light on the Hesitator — and how to move through this common creative block.

If you tend to hesitate when creating, you’re not alone. Your brain is probably loud, critical, and constantly questioning every choice you want to make. Sound familiar?

Here’s my first and most powerful recommendation (and it helps both Overdoers and Hesitators):

Tune in first. Let your intuition guide you before your analytical brain kicks in. Why? Because your instincts are where your creativity lives. And when you’re stuck in your head, your art can’t flow.

I guide all my Intuitive Painting students through a mindful body scan at the beginning of class, you do whatever works to drop out of your mind and into your body.

Once you’re more in your body and less in your head — amazing! Now it’s time to amplify that intuitive state with a playful exercise.

🎨 Try this: It’s called Speed Blind Painting — a favourite in my Intuitive Painting Course. Here’s the short version: Pick something you’d enjoy painting (a face, flowers, a landscape, something abstract).

Then paint it:

  • As fast as you can
  • Without looking at the paper

Sounds wild? It is! And wildly freeing. You’d be amazed at the beauty that comes through when you’re not “controlling” it. Some of my students have made masterpieces this way — and I create 90% of my own paintings using this approach. I purposely don’t let myself look too closely until I’m nearly done.

If you’re an Overdoer and want to paint more intuitively — this is the next exercise to try.

Why? Because when you let your body lead, your mind finally relaxes. And that’s when the real magic happens.

Give it a try and drop a comment to share your experience — I’d love to hear what you discover.

With joy and paint-splattered love,

Kia
