Application for Independence

The first time it happened, I blamed the light.
I raised my hand.
My reflection waited — not long enough to frighten me, Only long enough to make me wonder.
The next morning, The shower had left the mirror veiled with steam.
Before I reached out to clear it. My reflection’s side was already clean.
Days passed.
It learned to blink a fraction late. To look out of the window when I looked at myself. To notice the room instead of my face.
I began checking mirrors the way people check locked doors — certain they are safe, Yet never completely sure.
One evening, tucked beneath the frame, I found a single sheet of paper.
No signature. No date. Only one sentence.
Application for Independence.
I laughed. Then I stopped.
Because the handwriting was mine — except I had never written anything that honest.
I answered it by answering nothing.
Nothing changed after that.
I still applied makeup. Still adjusted my hair. Still practiced expressions before difficult conversations.
The reflection copied every one of them.
Faithfully. Almost lovingly.
Yet every morning, Its eyes returned to the window, as though the world outside had something I could no longer see.
Years later, I stood before the same mirror that had watched us both grow older.
Once, I believed, as everyone does, that a reflection should never have a life of its own.
I touched the glass.
Searching for someone.
Another hand met mine.
I recognized the face.
I did not recognize the distance.
Behind the mirror was a face like mine, but calm — as if it had already Stopped waiting.
It looked at me once.
Then it stepped back without hesitation.
Not into darkness, not into distance — just into a place I could not follow.
I remained.
Tomorrow morning, I know my reflection will be waiting.
It always is.
The only question I no longer know How to answer is this:
When one of us finally becomes free,
which one will remain Inside the mirror?
