Clinicians’ Views on using AI in Women’s Heart Health

Heart disease (cardiovascular disease, or CVD) affects many women, but it can be difficult for healthcare professionals to assess risk and manage prevention effectively.

This study aimed to (1) understand how clinicians view the prevention and management of CVD in women, and (2) explore what they need from an artificial intelligence (AI)–enabled tool to help with this work.

We interviewed 12 healthcare providers and specialists in Montreal, Canada, and analyzed their responses to find key themes. Seven main themes were identified.

For the first goal, three themes showed that clinicians face complex decisions, find current CVD risk assessment tools limited, and see a need for better educational resources and improved health literacy among patients.

For the second goal, four themes described clinicians’ expectations for an AI tool: it should save time and improve efficiency, offer multilingual options, connect smoothly with electronic medical records, and be simple and user-friendly.

Clinicians said they often struggle to manage women who are at higher risk for CVD and are not fully confident in the current decision support tools. However, they were open to using new systems, such as the proposed Xi-Care technology, and shared valuable ideas for its design.

The study concludes that clinicians need stronger support systems to prevent and manage CVD in women. AI-enabled technologies like Xi-Care could fill this gap — if they are built based on clinicians’ feedback to ensure they are safe, practical, and effective in real healthcare settings.
