ASEAN Chair Condemns Airstrike on Mrauk-U Hospital in Arakan

The Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has issued a strong statement condemning the airstrike on Mrauk-U Hospital in Arakan, describing the attack as unacceptable and in violation of international humanitarian law.

In a statement dated December 13, the ASEAN Chair expressed deep concern over the bombing carried out on December 10, 2025, which struck the hospital compound in Mrauk-U. According to the statement, the airstrike resulted in the deaths of at least 31 civilians and left at least 76 others injured, many of them patients and civilians seeking medical care.

ASEAN emphasized that attacks targeting civilians and medical facilities constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions of 1949, and are inconsistent with the principles enshrined in the ASEAN Charter. The regional bloc underscored that hospitals and medical personnel must be protected at all times, particularly amid ongoing armed conflict.

The ASEAN Chair also extended deepest sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families of the victims and to the affected communities in Arakan, while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack.

Urging an immediate end to violence, ASEAN called on all parties in Myanmar to halt indiscriminate attacks, stop targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and exercise the utmost restraint to ensure the safety and protection of the civilian population across the country.

The statement further reiterated ASEAN’s call for the full implementation of an expanded and extended nationwide ceasefire, as reaffirmed by ASEAN Leaders in May 2025, stressing that such a ceasefire is essential to prevent further loss of civilian life.

ASEAN also reaffirmed that the Five-Point Consensus remains the primary framework for addressing Myanmar’s political crisis. The Chair urged its full implementation to help the people of Myanmar, including those in conflict-hit Arakan, achieve an inclusive and durable peaceful resolution, contributing to long-term peace, security, and stability in the region.

For communities in Arakan, the airstrike on Mrauk-U Hospital has once again highlighted the devastating human cost of ongoing military violence and the urgent need for accountability, protection of civilians, and meaningful international action.
