If you are new to searching for your families, you are in for a treat. The intriguing and wonderful stories that you will discover are amazing. Because your relatives were not published in the history books does not mean that they were not statesmen, soldiers, or builders of thriving communities. As you read through old wills, estates, and pension records, the story will tell itself.

Why did the historians omit your relatives and only include the major players? Take the Revolutionary War. General George Washington was the focus because his decisions ultimately led to victory. But if you really want to know who won that war, read up on the Battle of King’s Mountain. While British Major Ferguson stood on a ledge overlook bragging that he would easily destroy the American Army, a group of armed woodsmen who left their homes in the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains, approached. The British muskets — fired straight ahead — but were no match for the long rifle that could fire from any angle. They were called “over the mountain men.”

It was more than a decisive battle, as it set the tone for future battles and final victory.

Where does one learn the names of these brave mountain men? Tracing these families through the back woods involves a little work. Specificially, reading the application of the soldier’s pension is worthy of study, as the soldier describes his battles.

Genealogy Tip: Take note of the names of the Generals and Colonels under whom the soldier served, and trace their career. That will provide a better grasp of the struggles, skirmishes, and battles. The officer may have taken the glory, but the fierce determination of the soldiers made it happen.
