Enhancing Somatic Wellbeing for Teachers: Practical Strategies for Reducing Stress

As teachers, we give so much of ourselves — mentally, emotionally, and physically. This can quickly lead to an accumulation of stress, which manifests not only in our minds but also in our bodies. Somatic wellbeing addresses the physical toll of stress, aiming to reduce its effects so we can feel more grounded and energized.

Teaching is a highly demanding profession. Overwhelming workloads, emotional labour, and behaviour challenges are just a few of the factors contributing to high teacher stress levels. Stress is the body’s natural response to these pressures, triggering fight-or-flight responses that release cortisol and adrenaline. Physical tension always accompanies stress and this tension can build-up over time — tense shoulders, back pain, headaches, fatigue, and sleep disruption — impacting overall health and job performance.

By improving somatic wellbeing, not only do we improve our physical health, but we also positively influence our mental clarity (cognitive wellbeing) and resilience (emotional wellbeing) — keys to thriving in the busy classroom.

Strategies to Support Somatic Wellbeing:

  1. Physical Movement Breaks: Simple exercises, like shoulder rolls or neck stretches, can release muscle tension. Try setting reminders on your phone to incorporate these into your day.
  2. Breathing Exercises: Diaphragmatic breathing (breathing into the belly) helps to calm the nervous system and shifts the body away from a fight-or-flight state. Even a few “belly-breaths” before a class can make a difference.
  3. Regular Physical Activity: Activities like walking, swimming, running, or dancing reduce cortisol levels and improve sleep quality. Aim to integrate movement into your daily routine, even if it’s a brief walk around the playground at lunchtime.
  4. Mind-Body Practices: Yoga, Tai Chi, or Pilates combine stretching with mental relaxation. These practices help release tension while also promoting a calm, focused mind, ideal for teachers facing daily stress.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Somatic wellbeing doesn’t require an overhaul of your daily routine. In fact, the most effective way to enhance your wellbeing is by starting small — incorporating manageable practices into your existing schedule. Try stretching between classes, taking a short walk during lunch, or doing belly-breathing before your next lesson.

You’ll soon notice the difference in how you feel, and this will carry over into your teaching, helping you become a more effective, joyful, and resilient educator.
