M.K. Gandhi articulated the idea of Swaraj in his book Hind Swaraj as self-rule at both the individual and community level. For Gandhi, Swaraj was not merely political independence but also ethical self-control and moral autonomy. True freedom, he argued, could only be realized through Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satya (truth).

He promoted Gram Swaraj, where each village would function as a self-sufficient, autonomous unit practicing direct democracy. Gandhi critiqued unchecked industrialization and centralization of power, warning that they would generate unemployment, environmental degradation, and social alienation. Instead, he advocated local economies, sustainability, and self-reliance. A modern parallel is Israel’s kibbutzim — community-based self-sufficient models. Yet, unlike Gandhi’s trusteeship model, which preserved private property for social welfare, kibbutzim operated on collective ownership and minimized private property rights.

In contrast, Aurobindo saw Swaraj as spiritual and cultural awakening, whereas Gandhi grounded it in non-violence and ethical conduct as foundations of social change.

However, B.R. Ambedkar critiqued Gandhi’s village-centered vision for ignoring caste oppression and rural injustices. Similarly, Jawaharlal Nehru argued that India required centralization and industrialization to modernize and alleviate poverty.

Despite such criticisms, Gandhi’s conception of Swaraj deeply influenced India’s democratic framework. The 73rd Constitutional Amendment institutionalized village self-governance, echoing his ideals. His stress on truth, non-violence, and decentralized governance continues to inspire debates on sustainable and ethical development.
