What is the OCQ way of asking questions?

I learnt this from one of my teacher during my training at Counselling and Care Centre, CCC.

Often people ask a questions without sharing their intentions, this leave the hearer wondering why that question was asked. Are they trying to trick us, find fault with us?

This is a very friendly, peaceful way to ask questions, offer suggestions and invite communication with the other person.

Observe

  • What are you hearing, seeing, or noticing?
  • “I hear you saying that ……….” “I notice you are doing that ……”

Curiosities

  • This is the important part. Share your inner process. What are you thinking about, curious about, any past events or similar knowledge you had? By sharing your inner process, others can also learn from you.
  • “I was thinking about a similar case…”. “I was wondering how the partner might be feeling…” “I wonder how you feel about the client’s reaction”

Questions

  • Then you offer your suggestions, and put forth your questions.
  • “I wonder if you have considered ……” “I am not sure if it fit your situation here, what about …..” “What makes you arrive at that conclusion?”
