Your Funeral Bill Has 14 Line Items. Most Are Legal. Few Are Fair.

When Mary-Ellen Hargrove’s mother died in February 2025, the funeral home handed her family a bill for $11,427. It had 14 line items. Several were charges the family didn’t understand, hadn’t been warned about, and in two cases hadn’t consented to.

The lowest-priced casket on the funeral home’s price list was $2,195. The same casket was available online for $699, delivered overnight. Federal law requires funeral homes to tell families this. Hers didn’t.

The Fees Nobody Explains

Her bill included a $495 “basic services of funeral director and staff” fee. Under FTC rules, this fee is non-declinable. You pay it even if you choose direct cremation with no viewing, no service, and no casket. Consumer advocates at the Funeral Consumers Alliance found that corporate-owned funeral homes charge 27% more for this fee than independents in the same cities.

Then there was the $395 “refrigeration” charge. Georgia law doesn’t require refrigeration if disposition happens within 24 hours. And a $795 “transfer of remains” fee for a 12-mile drive that cost roughly $8.40 in fuel.

This is not an exception. A 2019 Government Accountability Office study found that 27% of funeral homes surveyed violated the FTC Funeral Rule.

Corporate Consolidation Is Making It Worse

Service Corporation International, the largest funeral operator in North America, owns more than 1,500 funeral homes. A 2024 University of Minnesota study found that funeral homes in markets where SCI dominates charge 12% to 18% more for identical services.

SCI’s average revenue per funeral climbed from $5,856 in 2019 to $6,648 in 2024. That’s a 13.5% increase in five years, well ahead of inflation. The cost of waiting to plan is compounding.
