Everything you will ever need to know.

Start journaling

Journaling is something that has given me a lot of strength. It has helped me understand myself and my emotional patterns so much better. It is not just a tool, it’s a whole toolkit. If you have been seeing journaling as one single tool, get ready to change that thought.

I have been journaling since before I even knew the term for it. So the question of how to start journaling never really occurred to me. I am a writer, an aware one, and journaling came into my life like a soft Studio Ghibli hug.

Let’s first understand what journaling actually is, it will make everything else so much easier. And if you want a hand to hold through it, I have a free guide for that too.

What Is Journaling?

Giving an intent to writing. That’s it.

Journaling isn’t one fixed thing, it’s shaped by what you need from it. Want to keep your tasks in check so your days move more easily? That’s bullet journaling. Want to let your emotions out without holding back? That’s freehand journaling. Want to sit with a thought and actually understand it? That’s reflection journaling. There are many more forms, and none of them are more “right” than the other.

This is usually where people learning how to start journaling for mental health get stuck, they think there’s one correct way to do it. There isn’t. What you want to achieve becomes your companion in journaling. If you don’t know that yet, keep it simple. Practice a little gratitude, keep a soft record of your day, stay a little kind to yourself on the page.

Why do people struggle to Journal?

If you’ve tried before and stopped, you’re not doing it wrong, you’re just carrying a few myths.

The blank page feels heavy, like it needs to hold something profound, so you freeze before you start. There’s no format, so it’s easy to sit there wondering what you’re even supposed to write. It feels like one more task instead of a small comfort, so of course it gets skipped.

Once you see these for what they are, learning how to start journaling as a beginner stops feeling like a project and starts feeling like something gentle you’re allowed to enjoy.

How to Start Journaling? 3 Simple Steps

This is the part most people searching for how to start journaling actually want, so let’s keep it simple.

1. Choose your medium. A notebook, your phone’s notes app, a tablet, it genuinely doesn’t matter, until it does to you. The best medium is the one you’ll actually reach for on a tired evening.

2. Define your why, or borrow a format. Are you journaling for mental health, for self improvement, to process anxiety, or just to remember your days? Your why decides your format. If you don’t have one yet, borrow a simple daily structure until your own style shows up.

3. Start, and stay a little consistent. Not perfect, just consistent. It’s not really about the first page, it’s about showing up for the tenth one too. It’s that simple, and it’s allowed to stay that simple.

If you’d rather not build the format from scratch, this is exactly where a daily reset journal to start journaling earns its place, it hands you the structure so you can just show up and write.

Journaling Methods Explained

Once you’ve been journaling a while, you’ll notice certain methods fit certain moods. Here are a few worth knowing when you’re figuring out how to start journaling in a way that actually fits your life.

  1. The 3–2–1 method. Three things you’re grateful for, two things that challenged you, one thing you’re looking forward to. Good for evenings when your mind feels scattered.
  2. The 3–3–3 method. Name three things you see, three you hear, and move three parts of your body. It’s less about writing and more about grounding, useful when anxiety is loud.
  3. Free writing. No prompt, no structure, just whatever’s sitting in your chest that day. Best for release, not record keeping.
  4. Gratitude journaling. Short, daily, and quietly powerful over time, often the gentlest entry point into how to start journaling for self improvement.
  5. Junk journaling. A mix of scraps, tickets, doodles, and words pasted together, more about collecting than correcting.
  6. Art journaling. Journaling through visuals, sketches, colour, and collage, for when words feel too small for the feeling.
  7. Digital journaling. The same practice, just on an app or notes tool, good when you want your entries searchable or tucked behind a passcode.
  8. Shadow work journaling. Sitting with the parts of yourself you usually avoid, old fears and patterns, gently and without judgment.
  9. Bullet journaling. Tasks, trackers, and lists kept in one place so your days move easier.
  10. Reflection journaling. Sitting with a thought or moment long enough to actually understand it, not just record it.
  11. Manifestation journaling. Writing your goals and desires as though they’re already unfolding, used to build clarity and belief.

If this feels like a lot to hold in your head, our **guided journals** are essentially these methods, already laid out for you, page by page.

Your first page doesn’t need to mean anything. No good handwriting, no clean structure, no wise sentence. It just needs to exist. Most people searching how to start journaling as a beginner are quietly hoping for permission to do it messily, so here it is: you have it.

If you’d like something to hold your hand through that very first page, that’s exactly what our **free journaling beginner guide** was made for, it walks you through the whole thing gently, no pressure attached.
