The Kite That Forgot It Was Tied

There’s an old story we tell at our centres about a kite that spent years believing it could never fly higher than the rooftop it was launched from. Every time the wind pulled it upward, the kite would panic and dive back down — not because the string was too short, but because it had never been told how far the sky actually went.

We think about that kite a lot at Pehchaan The Street School. Because most of our students are, in some ways, still discovering how far their own sky goes.

Every street corner in Delhi NCR seems to be selling a dream, a coaching program, or a quick route to a better place, making the city boisterous with aspiration. However, that same noise may occasionally seem to belong to someone else to a child growing up in an underprivileged community. If it occurs at all, school is frequently the first setting where the students are softly and painstakingly reminded that the sky was always theirs too.

That’s what a classroom really is, once you strip away the blackboard and the benches. It’s the place where a child who has only ever been told to be smaller, quieter, less — is finally asked, what do you think?It’s where a guy who might be born into harsh reality finds he’s actually very good at painting them, and where a girl who gets water before dawn learns what a fraction is. Fundamentally, education is not about knowledge. It’s about permission — permission to imagine a life bigger than the one already written for you.

Of course, that permission needs constant reminding. Children forget they’re allowed to dream the same way the kite forgot it could fly — not out of ingratitude, but because no one had shown them proof. And proof doesn’t always come from a syllabus. Sometimes it walks in wearing a birthday smile, like when former teammate Radhika Sehgal chose to spend her birthday with 65 students at our GTB Centre, sharing cake, biscuits, and drawing books instead of the usual party. Sometimes proof comes in a cardboard box, like the afternoon our friends at Doughin’ It Right sent fresh cupcakes for every student and pastries for the volunteers who show up, without fail, day after day. These moments, small as they seem, are proof — proof that people outside their four walls see them, and think they’re worth showing up for.

There’s a song we occasionally hum at our centres, the kind of song mothers sing to children everywhere — about how the same moon watches over every rooftop, rich or poor, tall or crumbling. It’s a simple tune, but it carries a large idea: that no child is too far away to be reached, too small to be seen, or too “different” to belong under the same sky as everyone else.

At Pehchaan The Street School, that’s the sky we’re trying to widen — one lesson, one classroom, one shared laugh at a time. Not because we believe every child needs saving, but because every child, like that kite, simply needs someone to untie the string it never realised was optional.

And widening the sky isn’t a one-person job. It takes a Radhika who gives up her birthday for a classroom full of strangers, a Doughin’ It Right that turns an ordinary Tuesday into something worth remembering, and hundreds of quieter hands in between — the ones who teach on weekends, mentor over phone calls, or simply believe a child’s postcode shouldn’t decide their potential.
