The Captain of Industry’s Journal XX: Expanding Our Dedicated Maintenance Facility
We’re almost done connecting our biggest facilities, so it’s time to prepare for the next step in expanding our industry.
The Captain of Industry’s Journal XX: Expanding Our Dedicated Maintenance Facility

Our island is healthy and growing.
We’ve just completed our fertilizer factory, so it’s now time to move forward with connecting the rest of our facilities to the rail network.
Our next project is to transfer the electronics, mechanical parts, and maintenance buildings, and add more buildings to ensure that our island can operate at full capacity without encountering problems. At the moment, we consume a total of 1,564.5 units of Maintenance I per minute at max output.

We can determine how much maintenance our island consumes at the moment, plus its maximum maintenance requirement per minute.
Building the Maintenance & Production Facility
These numbers show that we need to build 6 Maintenance I factories that output a total of 2,880 units of Maintenance per minute. This should be enough to last us for a long time, even after building several new facilities.
Building this many Maintenance I buildings means that we need 144 units of Mechanical Parts and 72 units of Electronics I per minute. Of course, this does not consider the other facilities that demand those items.
When we factor them in, we have a production shortfall in all those resources when running everything altogether. Thankfully, we build our projects one at a time and stabilize the entire first before starting a new one, so we don’t have to deal with that issue — at least for the time being.

The Maintenance & Production Facility 2 keeps the island running.
Of course, we will also build a waste sorting plant to separate the different kinds of scrap byproducts our maintenance buildings produce. But even though I have six of these units, they still don’t make enough recyclables to run the sorting plant at capacity. As a result, we added a couple of Storage III units and an import platform, enabling it to process recyclables from other facilities.
After we finish this project, we’ll have to wait a while for the island to stabilize. After all, the massive storage units that take steel, copper, and rubber mean that our facilities that make these will have to restock the items now stored in our new maintenance facility.
Digging for More Space

We’ll clear and flatten all this land.
It takes a bit of time to dig through a mountain, so after setting up our new maintenance facility, we will start our excavators on clearing some land near the copper mine. That way, we can set up a train station for it.
We’ll also build a train station to take away all the extra rock that we’ll get from the terraforming operation. That way, we can use it to expand our main dock and fill in land near our latest coal and limestone mine to build a train station on.

This terraforming train station will help remove the rock coming from the mountain in the background.
Moving the Rail Facility
After setting up the train station to move the rock and dirt coming from the terraforming operations to the west of the island more efficiently, we will create a new rail facility. Since we don’t need to upgrade our production capacity, we’ll just move the factories to the west side of the island and connect them to the rail network.

Our rail production facility is now connected to the rail network.
The only change we made from the original layout is to relocate the output storage units to the same side as the input ones, thereby saving space.
Connecting the Copper Ore Mine to the Rail Network
Now that our excavators have cleared enough flat land near our copper mine, we can build a train station to serve it. It’s connected to the rest of the rail network via the terraforming train station, but we intend to also lay down rail towards the iron ore mine. That way, we have alternative routes for our trains in the future.

The copper ore mine can be connected to the iron ore mine, but we need to reclaim land between the sea and the copper mine.
But because our trucks haven’t reclaimed enough land to allow us to put tracks that won’t interfere with the copper mine, we’ll have to settle for a single access point for our copper ore mine train station for the time being.
Island To-Do List
We’ve made good progress on our to-do list, with most of our facilities and industries now connected via rail. But even though we’re already a massive, sprawling island base, we still need to do more.
- Build a train station that will serve the Settlement Food Facility.
- Continue flattening the area near the copper mine and the iron ore mine.
- Transfer the Vehicle Facility and Train Yard and connect them to the rail network.
- Rebuild the Research Facility and connect it to the rail network.
- Create a corn processing facility to convert excess corn into ethanol and plastic.
- Construct a site to manufacture silicon from sand.
- Produce Electronics II.
- Upgrade the research facility and connect it to the rail network.
- Build a train station for the Logging Facility.
- Build a waste processing facility to process waste and waste water.
