When the Heart Feels Noisy: Learning to Find Calm Under Allah’s Decree

Author: Putri Luthfiana (Fiqh and Tahfiz Teacher of MAN 1 Yogyakarta)

Not all anxiety comes from reality; some of it is born from a mind that wanders too far ahead, worrying about things that may never even happen. The heart feels crowded, thoughts drift across endless possibilities, and in such moments, one may quietly ask, “What is really happening to me?”

Feelings like these are deeply human. Everyone experiences them at some point. Yet, as Muslims, we are not left alone to navigate this inner turbulence. Islam offers a profound framework to calm a restless heart.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

۞مَآ اَصَابَ مِنْ مُّصِيْبَةٍ فِى الْاَرْضِ وَلَا فِيْٓ اَنْفُسِكُمْ اِلَّا فِيْ كِتٰبٍ مِّنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ نَّبْرَاَهَاۗ اِنَّ ذٰلِكَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ يَسِيْرٌ

“No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being — indeed that, for Allah, is easy.” (QS. Al-Hadid: 22)

This verse carries a powerful message: everything has already been decreed. What we fear, what we worry about, even what has yet to happen — all of it exists within Allah’s knowledge and plan. Often, the anxiety we feel does not stem from reality, but from thoughts that go beyond our limits.

Many times, we feel overwhelmed because we try to control what is not ours to control. We want certainty about the future, understanding from everyone, and perfection in every outcome. Yet, this is where the heart grows tired — when we attempt to take on the role of managing destiny.

Allah reminds us:

وَمَنْ يَّتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللّٰهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهٗۗ

“And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him.” (QS. At-Talaq: 3)

Trust (tawakkul) is not about surrendering without effort. It is about doing one’s best and then letting go of the outcome. When anxiety rises, it may be a sign that we are holding too tightly to something that should be entrusted to Allah.

Alongside anxiety, feelings of insecurity and self-doubt often emerge. We compare ourselves to others and feel inadequate. Social media intensifies this, presenting curated lives that appear flawless, while we feel full of shortcomings.

But have we considered that every human is created uniquely?

Allah says:

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ فِيْٓ اَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيْمٍ

“We have certainly created man in the best form.” (QS. At-Tin: 4)

This is not only about physical form, but also about the potential, strengths, and purpose embedded within each individual. No one is created without meaning. Everyone has their own role in this world.

Insecurity often arises because we are too busy observing someone else’s “field” while neglecting our own. We focus on what we lack and forget what we already have.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised:

“Look at those below you (in worldly matters), and do not look at those above you. That is more likely to prevent you from underestimating Allah’s blessings.” (HR. Muslim)

This teaching offers a simple yet powerful shift in perspective. It does not discourage ambition, but balances it with gratitude.

The Prophet also taught a supplication for moments of distress:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from the burden of debt and the oppression of people.” (HR. Bukhari)

This prayer reminds us that anxiety is part of the human experience — but we are guided not to drown in it. Instead, we are encouraged to return to Allah, acknowledge our limitations, and seek peace from Him.

So when the heart feels heavy, pause for a moment. Take a breath and remember: not everything you think is reality. Not every fear is truth. Sometimes, it is simply the mind amplifying uncertainty.

Draw closer to Allah. Increase remembrance (dhikr), for He has promised:

اَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ تَطْمَىِٕنُّ الْقُلُوْبُ۞

“Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (QS. Ar-Ra’d: 28)

Calmness does not mean the absence of problems. It means facing them without losing direction. It means trusting that whatever unfolds is part of Allah’s best plan.

In the end, life is not about being perfect. It is about learning to rely on Allah amid imperfection.

So if today your heart feels noisy — filled with worry, doubt, and fear — remember: it is not the end. It is a gentle call to return. To return to Allah, to gratitude, and to the certainty that you are never truly alone.

Because beyond all uncertainty, one truth remains:

Allah’s decree is always the best.
