I tracked my mood for a month… and this was unexpected

Spoiler: I wasn’t “happy” the most time and I’m actually okay with that

So I realized something recently, and it honestly surprised me.

At the start of 2026, I got this new diary. Not the “dear diary, today I cried again” type. Now this one has a page where you can track your mood, so I thought, why not give it a try?

Every day, I just add one colour based on how my day felt. Simple.

I made categories like happy, calm, grateful, bored and then obviously, multiple levels of sad: medium, highest, lowest… please don’t laugh, but yes, these are my categories… of a fully grown 24-year-old. Very mature system, I know.

Because let’s be real, sadness is not one-size-fits-all.

Some days it’s “just existing, don’t ask” sad, some days it’s “please don’t talk to me” sad, and then sometimes it’s “life sucks, everything is annoying, and I’m done” kind of sad.

So yeah… full range available.

Now, as it was the end of March, I sat down to review my month. Just casually looking at all those colours. And I noticed something.

I was calm on more days than I was happy.

And weirdly… I felt proud. I was actually happy that calm showed up more.

And here’s why.

I don’t think being “happy all the time” is even realistic. Like what does that even mean?

For you to be constantly happy, everything in your life has to go exactly the way you want.

Every plan works. Every person behaves. Every message gets the reply you expect. Every situation feels perfect. Every wish comes true (even my wish of casually driving my brand new Porsche in Beverly Hills).

Yeah… good luck with that.

But calm? Calm is different. For me, calm means even if things don’t go my way, I’m still okay. I’m not overthinking, not stressed, not spiraling. I’m just… steady. It’s like, “Okay, this didn’t work out. Fine. What next?

Being calm, to me, is a luxury.

Because happiness often depends on external things. People, situations, outcomes, timing, luck.

But calm? That’s internal.

That’s your response. Your control. Your mindset.

You can be calm in a good situation. You can be calm in a bad one. You can be calm when life is smooth… and also when it’s throwing chaos at you for no reason at all.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love being happy. I’m not rejecting happiness, but I just don’t expect it 24/7 anymore.

What I do want is peace.

Because if I can stay calm, even in messy, uncomfortable, unfair, confusing, emotionally draining situations, then no one can take that away from me.

Not people. Not problems. Not bad timing. Not even that annoying negative voice in my head that randomly wakes up at 2am just to ruin my mood.

And I’ve started seeing calm as a skill. A real skill.

Which means I can practice it.

Right now, my small goal is simple. I want to see a full week in my diary filled with calm stickers. That’s it.

Then maybe a month. Then a quarter. Then who knows… a year?

Let’s not get too ambitious, I still get irritated over small things like slow WiFi.

And here’s another thing, I’m not doing meditation, yoga, or any of that right now. I used to, but not anymore.

And I just want to say this clearly: Those are not the only ways to stay calm.

What I’m actually doing is… understanding. Like real understanding. Or as we say in Gujarati, samjan. It’s a mix of maturity, reality checks, and honestly just talking to myself with logic.

Reminding myself again and again that this life we have got is so precious, it is meant to be lived, not spent worrying about everything.

When something goes wrong, instead of reacting immediately, I seriously ask things to myself, like: -* Will this matter in a week?

  • Is this really worth ruining my mood, time and energy?
  • Is this really a deal breaker situation?*

And I repeat this daily.

In small situations. Big ones. Random ones.

It’s like training my mind. Slowly making calm my default setting instead of panic.

And no, it doesn’t work perfectly every time. I still get annoyed, sad, exhausted, frustrated. I’m human, not a monk.

But I try to recover faster now. And that, honestly, feels like progress.

So now I’m curious… What about you?

Do you chase happiness more, or do you value calm? And how do you stay calm when things go wrong?

Because if there’s one thing I’m learning, it’s this:

Being happy is great. But being calm? That’s power.
